  • AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who successfully enroll in college. AVID targets students in the academic middle–students with a 2.0 to 3.5 Grade Point Average-who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. AVID is a regularly scheduled elective class that meets during the school day empowering students to achieve academic excellence.

        What are AVID student expectations?



        AVID students maintain at least a "C" average in scholarship and citizenship, study every night, and enroll in college preparatory classes. The AVID student's goal is to pursue a post-secondary education successfully.


        What are AVID parent expectations?

        AVID parents encourage their students to achieve academically, to maintain regular contact with the site AVID Teacher, and to become involved in AVID sponsored activities.

What does the research say about AVID?

Independent research, together with AVID's own data, validate that the AVID college-readiness system works. 

AVID students are more likely to take Advanced Placement classes, to complete their college eligibility requirements, and to obtain admission into four-year colleges, than students who do not take AVID.

Almost all AVID students who participate for at least three years are accepted into college, with roughly 75% being accepted into four-year universities. AVID also helps to ensure that students possess the higher-level skills they need to be successful in their lifelong academic pursuits.

AVID high school graduates complete course requirements for college entrance rates at 87%-93% regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic status, compared to the national average of 36%. This high rate of success for AVID students contributes dramatically to closing the achievement gap.

        AVID is in over 4,837 K-12 schools in 47 states as well as the District of Columbia and 16 countries/territories including all U.S. Department of Defense schools. Large urban schools, small rural schools, resource-rich suburban schools, and struggling schools, all find that AVID meets their goal of successfully promoting college readiness strategies.  AVID is also in 41 Higher Education facilities around the United States.
