Excellence for Every Child

STAFF PROFILE OF THE WEEK

  • David Combs

David Combs serves as the Liberal Arts Academy assistant principal and is a familiar face in the valley, having been a Hawk for 11 of HVA’s 12 years. He has been selected for Knox County Schools’ Aspiring Principals Program for 2019-2020. In December, you can find Mr. Combs dressed as an elf and getting into all kinds of mischief, keeping students laughing during the stress of finals week. “As an educator, you have to hold very high expectations but make it fun. You will be surprised by the amazing things that kids can accomplish,” Mr. Combs said. A Chattanooga native, Mr. Combs holds B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Tennessee and an Ed.S. from Lincoln Memorial University. In his spare time, he enjoys distance running and wood working. He began his career in education as a history teacher at West High School before coming to HVA when the school opened in 2008. Mr. Combs was named teacher of the year in HVA’s opening year, as well as twice at West. He served as dean of the Liberal Arts Academy before becoming an assistant principal in 2010. After a one-year stint as an assistant principal at L&N STEM Academy, Mr. Combs returned to the nest in 2015. Now in his 20th year as an educator, he said his favorite part of working at HVA is “getting to work with really great kids and teachers”. Thanks for all you do for HVA, Mr. Combs!
