Trauma Healing Center

Adult Programs

The Helen Ross McNabb Center provides comprehensive outpatient treatment and support services for individuals who are experiencing severe and persistent mental illness, stress-related problems and organic brain disorders. Adult programs are based at the Helen Ross McNabb Adult Services Center. The programs provide comprehensive services for adults who are referred to the Center by a variety of sources including psychiatric hospitals and physicians, social service agencies, family or friends, the Knox County Health Department and the courts. Office Hours: Monday- Friday from 9:00AM – 5:00PM

Adult Continuous Treatment Team

Adult CTT is an intensive outpatient treatment program that is comprehensive in nature. This program offers case management, management crisis intervention, advocacy and goal oriented therapy services. CTT clients will also have on call crisis services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Adult Indigent Care Program (AICP)

The Adult Indigent Care Program has been designed to provide outpatient mental health services to the indigent populations of Knox and Blount Counties, with the goal of reducing barriers to needed treatment within the communities. The program seeks to provide medication management and individual therapy services to individuals exhibiting mental health symptoms, while assisting the individual in locating long-term care options. The program also provides assistance obtaining medications through utilization of the Center's sample medication services and the completion of applications for pharmaceutical assistance programs. 

Adult Integrated Service Team (IST)

The Integrated Service Team (IST) uses a multi-disciplinary team approach to provide inclusive care to a wide variety of individuals diagnosed with a mental illness. Medication management, case management and therapy are the cornerstones of the Center's clinical care. Clients are provided comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, illness education and management, crisis intervention, psychosocial assessments, individual and family therapy and case management services. Clinicians may also link clients to community resources and natural support systems which provide additional assistance that aids in recovery, rehabilitation and stability. 

Corrections Mental Health Services

The Corrections Mental Health Service provides staff for jail-based mental health services to three Knox County Detention Facilities and in Blount County and support of jail staff on mental health issues, as well as linkage, referral, and mental health and addiction release planning. Services include full and brief mental health assessments, crisis intervention, medication assessments and recommendations, psychiatric medication prescriptions, brief supportive counseling, brief alcohol and drug assessments and training and support of jail staff on mental health issues.

Developmental Disabilities Services

Developmental Disabilities Services furnish support for individuals with mental retardation and/or other developmental disabilities. These services are delivered through the Psychopharmacology Clinic, a consultative service to the East Tennessee Regional Office of the Tennessee Division of Mental Retardation Services. The goal of this program is to enhance clients' quality of life by helping them establish and maintain stability and by taking advantage of the myriad of available community resources. The Psychopharmacology Clinic provides consultative evaluations for adults with developmental disabilities coupled with mental illness. 

Forensic Services

The Center provides court-ordered evaluations for competency to stand trial and insanity defense for defendants in Knox County Criminal, Juvenile and General Sessions Courts. A team of state-certified forensic examiners conducts evaluations to determine the defendant's competency to stand trial and/or the mental condition of the accused at the time of the alleged offense. These evaluations are completed on an outpatient basis at the Helen Ross McNabb Center or at the jails. Additional consultation services include assessment of the need for psychiatric, alcohol or drug treatment or other supportive services.

Knox County Criminal Justice/Mental Health Liaison

The Criminal Justice/Mental Health Liaison is a statewide community-level project that focuses on issues affecting adults who have serious mental illness and are involved in the criminal justice system. The goals of the project are to reduce the number of adults with mental illness in the jails and to facilitate communication and the coordination of activities between the community, the criminal justice and mental health systems. Services are provided at all levels of the criminal justice process and include early identification of persons with mental illness, diversion, continuity of care while incarcerated, consultation with the court regarding course of action, planning for release, outcome monitoring, training and education.

Martha A. Withers Friendship House Peer Support Center

Social and recreational rehabilitation services are located at the consumer-run Friendship House Peer Support Center. To be eligible for membership an individual must be at least 18 years old and a current or former mental health services consumer. The program encourages Friendship House members to act independently and be an active part of their communities through client-driven social, recreational, cultural, and educational and support activities. Members may receive basic job skills training by serving as a volunteer greeter, kitchen assistant, fitness center receptionist or barter room clerk at Friendship House. They also volunteer in the community at homeless shelters, help with beautification projects or help prepare gifts and food baskets during holidays.

Program for Assertive Community Treatment

The Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) is designed to help adults with severe mental illnesses reduce or eliminate their symptoms, function in the community, live independently, and reduce hospitalization. The program provides intensive, direct care and services 365 days a year. Services are delivered primarily in the home and in the community which enhances accessibility and the comfort level of clients. There is no time limit on program participation.

Psychiatric Rehabilitation

Psychiatric Rehabilitation services are designed to enhance and support the process of recovery for individuals in their living, learning, working and social environments. The program offers many classes, which are offered in a classroom setting. Subjects include computer skills, reading, daily living skills, art therapy, physical exercise, anger management, educational service and referral, job interviewing and resume writing skills, and job search and assessment. The goal is to provide services that will assist the individual with support and skills needed to function independently and successfully in the environment of his or her choice.

Safety Net

Safety Net is a program created by the State of Tennessee and the Department of Mental Health/ Developmental Disabilities (TDMHDD) to provide mental health treatment for individuals who were disenrolled from TennCare. The Safety Net program was designed primarily to provide medication evaluations and pharmacy assistance to these individuals. Additional services include individual therapy and case management. 

The Project for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH) 

The PATH program provides services to homeless individuals who have severe and persistent mental illnesses. To qualify for the program, an individual must have a history of mental illness, be homeless or at risk for homelessness and must reside within Knox County limits. Outreach workers help these individuals achieve stable lives by engaging them in mental health treatment and assisting them in securing affordable housing, supportive income and other basic necessities. By providing access to community services and ensuring continuity of care, the program empowers mentally ill clients to break the cycle of homelessness.

Bridges - SCHOOL-BASED SERVICES (Blount County)

The Blount County Bridges program works with students at Heritage and William Blount High Schools, in a specialized behavior modification classroom at Everett Learning Opportunity Center, at Fort Craig, John Sevier, Sam Houston and Foothills Elementary Schools, in addition to Maryville Intermediate School. The program is designed to help students who were identified as having emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfered with their educational progress. Goals include the reduction of psychiatric hospitalization days, improved attendance and grades, increased communication and cooperation between home and school, less restrictive academic placements and reduction of juvenile court involvement and school suspensions.

Child Net

Child Net is an innovative program that provides counseling, behavioral management, and community support for children and their families. Child Net works with children and their families who are at significant risk of “slipping through the cracks of the system.” The program helps prevent future problems as children grow and mature, as well as to help keep troubled children out of state’s custody, the prison system, psychiatric hospitals, or other more intensive, restrictive, and expensive levels of care. Children and Youth Homeless Outreach Program

The Children and Youth Homeless Outreach Program is specifically designed to meet the needs of children ages three to 18 who reside in Knox County and are suffering from severe emotional disturbances related to homelessness. Outreach workers strive to enable children to cope with lifestyle stresses by offering treatment options within the community and by assisting with finding housing opportunities for their families. Program staff works closely with Knoxville area homeless shelters, schools and other community agencies to ensure that these goals are met.

EXIT

EXIT provides services to Knoxville and the surrounding 15 county East Tennessee region. The program is an intensive aftercare program for juvenile offenders committed to custody of the Department of Children's Services (DCS).  The focus of the program is to help prevent a return to jail and to help ensure a successful reintegration into the community. EXIT counselors work with the youths and their families during and after incarceration and also  with the DCS, Knox County Juvenile Court, local law enforcement and schools to enforce probation expectations and monitor compliance.   

Home Base

Home Base is an intensive probation program for juvenile offenders ages 12 to 18 who are on "suspended commitment" (commitment to the state is suspended in lieu of participation in this program) to the Department of Children's Services. The program's goal is to improve and strengthen the family unit, which assists the youth to remain at home and in their community and avoid placement in state custody.  Office Hours: Monday- Friday from 9:00AM – 5:00PM

Innerchange – Juvenile Justices Services

The Innerchange Program serves youth ages 12-18 that are on probation and live in Knox County. Innerchange is a cooperative effort with the Knox County Juvenile Court. The goal of the program is to reduce court involvement and prevent custody to DCS by addressing the individual and family root causes that precipitated the youth's initial involvement in the court system.

Mountain View Services

The Mountain View Services program provides mental health services to youth residing at Mountain View Youth Developmental Center in Dandridge, Tennessee. This developmental center is a 144-bed state-managed residential facility that serves youth who have been committed to the custody of the DCS following conviction of felony crimes. Youth are referred by case managers at the facility and then assessed to determine appropriate treatment services.                           

Other Blount County School-Based Services

The Helen Ross McNabb Center provides a behavioral consultant to special education students in schools throughout Blount County. The counselor conducts functional behavior analysis and behavior support plans as requested by teachers, also serving as a consultant to teachers who work with special needs children.

Regional Intervention Program

The Regional Intervention Program (RIP) is an internationally recognized model for a behavior modification program for families with preschool-age children who may exhibit behavior such as tantrums or behavior that is overly active, withdrawn or aggressive. Parent participation is crucial in this program. RIP services include beginning behavior management training, advanced behavior management training, classroom programs that teach children social skills, child care, preschool intervention and follow-up services for families who complete the program. Office Hours: Monday- Friday from 9:00AM – 5:00PM

Therapeutic Pre-School

The Therapeutic Pre-School Program serves children age’s two to six who have been sexually, emotionally or physically abused or neglected. The Pre-School provides cognitive and developmental stimulation, therapeutic behavioral treatment, nurturing, structure and help with basic skills. Parent participation is an integral part of the program. Parents learn to become more competent teachers for their children and learn to use effective and appropriate discipline. TRACS Program

TRACS program works with middle school children ages 10-14 years of age, who reside in economically disadvantaged areas of Knox County, and are exhibiting high risk factors that include but are not limited to substance abusing parents, domestic violence, placement into foster care and poor school performance. This program is an after school program designed to provide prevention services weekly.

TRACES Foster Care

The Tennessee Regional Alternative Care Environments (TRACES) Foster Care program serves children in the custody of DCS ages birth through 21 years.   These children have been removed from their families of origin due to abuse, neglect, unruliness or delinquency. The program recruits and trains caring, structured foster parents to help these children who enter custody with a multitude of problems and needs. Children can have mental illnesses, addictions, school issues, poor peer relationships, abandonment and trauma issues and developmental delays. Great care is taken to match these children with an appropriate family to provide the child with a positive family experience.

Safe Haven Center also employs specialized nurses who are trained in performing exams on sexual assault victims between the ages of 13 and 17 years old. If the victim is a juvenile, and lives in Knox County, and the assault falls within the Department of Children’s Services criteria, then Safe Haven Center will perform those rape kits. The nurses also provide STD prophylaxis and emergency contraceptive medications. In addition, Safe Haven Center performs exams on adults at some local hospitals and always at the Safe Center.
