MONITOR ONLINE BEHAVIOR
With Bark, parents can receive notifications when their children access to content that they deem inappropriate. Parents can set alerts for keywords used in text and online for a fee.
MANAGE CONTENT RATINGS
The ratings of "G" and "PG" are not as telling as most of us would hope. To learn more about the content of the show, website, book, or game, parents can access Common Sense Media. CSM is a great resource to help determine if a show is right for your family.
PARENT CONTROLS
It's important to establish boundaries early on and set clear and definable boundaries for online behavior with your child. Be sure to discuss bullying, what to do if X happens, explain that not everyone is who they say they are online, and reiterate the importance of keeping their personal information private. Remember, you have built-in parental controls that allow you to manage screen time, view a device, and restrict certain websites.
ONLINE SAFETY PODCAST EPISODE
The Counseling Corner Podcast has an excellent episode on screen-time and internet safety with children. They provide a practical approach to managing your child's time online and discuss resources to monitor and manage their online content and information. *Warning: she does use one expletive which might not be appropriate for young listeners.
