Hello students and parents!

My name is Nadine Huyck, and I am looking forward to being the Gibbs Elementary School Counselor again this year! 

I am originally from Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania.  I attended Slippery Rock State University where I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education. I decided to return to school for Counseling and earned a Master’s Degree at The University of Maryland while living overseas.

I consider it a great honor to be here and to be given the responsibility of helping our students develop into well-rounded contributing members of society. In classroom lessons this year we will talk about feelings and appropriate responses to those feelings, behavior and expectations, career and future goals, social interaction, how to cope with bullying behaviors, friendship, personal responsibility and many other topics.  This year, we will have a school-wide program called Character Counts as well as having a HABIT dog!

HABIT stands for Human Animal Bond in Tennessee.  Dot has been introduced to the school and I will be working with her in classroom lessons, groups and individual sessions. I'm looking forward to seeing the students learning and growing from this experience.  She's been well received by students and staff alike. 

In one-on-one and group sessions, my main goal is to help students as efficiently as possible and send them back to the classroom.   I firmly believe that our students need to learn to solve their own problems. By "fixing" their problems for them, we do them a disservice, so I work with our students to make sure they have the skills to deal with social, emotional and relational issues.

Hello Gibbs families!  My name is Lori Kitts, and I am the co-counselor here at Gibbs Elementary School alongside Ms. Huyck. I was a music teacher at Gibbs and in Knox County Schools for many years, and I am thrilled to be back here as a part of the counseling team! My family lives in Corryton, and we love being part of the Gibbs community.

Working with elementary students is something that brings me great joy. My desire is to impact each student in a positive way and to help them to grow and develop socially, emotionally and academically during their time here at Gibbs Elementary.
