• About the Counselor

    Hello students and parents!

My name is Nadine Huyck, and I am looking forward to being the Gibbs Elementary School Counselor again this year!

I am originally from Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania where until I attended college, I had lived my entire life. After high school graduation I attended Slippery Rock State University where I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education. Eventually I decided to return to school for Counseling and earned a Masters Degree at The University of Maryland while living overseas.

I consider it a great honor to be here and to be given the responsibility of helping our students develop into well rounded contributing members of society. In classroom lessons this year we will talk about feelings and appropriate responses to those feelings, behavior and expectations, career and future goals, social interaction, how to cope with bullying behaviors, friendship, personal responsibility and many other topics.  This year, we will have a school-wide program called Character Counts as well as having a HABIT dog!

HABIT stands for Human Animal Bond in Tennessee.  Dot has been introduced to the school and I will be working with her in classroom lessons, groups and individual sessions. I'm looking forward to seeing the students learning and growing from this experience.  She's been well received by students and staff alike.

                                                                              Ms. Huyck and Dot

In one-on-one and group sessions, my main goal is to help students as efficiently as possible and return them back to the classroom.   I firmly believe that our students need to learn to solve their own problems. By "fixing" their problems for them we do them a disservice, so I work with our students to make sure they have the skills to deal with social, emotional and relational issues.

If you have any questions about the services I provide please email or call me anytime. Have a great year everyone!!!

Hello Gibbs families!  My name is Jessy Alva and I am the co-counselor here at Gibbs Elementary School alongside Ms. Huyck.  I was fortunate to complete my school counseling internship here at Gibbs Elementary during the 2019-2020 school year, and am so thrilled to be back here with the Gibbs family for my second year as a professional school counselor for Knox County Schools.

I've lived in Tennessee for most of my life and absolutely love living here in Knoxville.  I moved to Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee and study psychology.  After completing my bachelor's degree, I spent a year working with adolescents in a drug and alcohol residential rehabilition facility, as well as working in a leadership position in a local after school program.  I realized I loved working with young people and working in schools, so I decided to attend Carson-Newman University to obtain my master's degree in professional school counseling.

I love working as a school counselor, especially at the elementary level, because I recognize that the skills young children learn when coping with challenges will follow them the rest of their lives.  We have the opportunity to teach them ways to regulate their emotions when dealing with life stressors, and these skills are essential in all aspects of their lives.  We also get to help young people dream about what kind of mark they want to leave on the world, and how to excel in the classroom.  To me, these subjects are both exciting and extremely important, and I love what I do!

    Ms. Alva

In addition, the fall semester of 2021, Ms. Huyck will have an intern working with her!  Here is her introduction to us:

Hello! My name is Alissa Cox, and I am excited to be interning as a school counselor at Gibbs Elementary for the duration of the 2021-2022 school year! I am in my final year of my master’s program at the University of Tennessee and will be receiving licensure following the completion of this internship and graduation in May 2022. I previously gained direct school counseling experience working as a practicum student at a middle school that is also located in Knox County.

My graduate education has featured courses with topics such as counseling skills and theories, group therapy, classroom management, human development, child-centered play therapy, diversity, research, and more. I also have an associate’s degree in Elementary Education, with experience in several classrooms including special education, and a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, concentrated in teaching and human behavior.

I was born and raised here in Knoxville, Tennessee and am a proud Tennessee Vol! I spend my free time enjoying the outdoors with my dog, a three year old Australian Shepherd named Cojo, listening to music and podcasts, and spending time with the people I love. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at acox52@vols.utk.edu
