• The vision of the HVA counseling program is to aid students in reaching their full potential on an academic, college/career, and social/emotional level. The counseling program will help to empower students to create and achieve goals, become independent thinkers, and leaders in the school and community.

The school counseling office is comprised of six counselors, an administrative assistant, and the registrar. For contact information and additional information, please see the menu to the left.

The school counseling department offers a comprehensive program of services and informational resources to students and parents. Major emphasis is placed on the individual student. All freshmen have the same counselor to assist them in the transition from middle school to high school. Sophomore year the student body is divided into four academies. A counselor is assigned to each academy to provide all academic planning and scheduling services to that group. With this plan, counselors follow their students from sophomore year through senior year. This approach has two major advantage: a continuity of services and a greater understanding of each student. Additionally, we have a College & Career Counselor who meets primarily with seniors and juniors to assist with developing goals for post secondary college and career planning.

The services provided through the School Counseling Department include: individual counseling, small and large group guidance, freshman orientation, new student orientation, scheduling, assistance with post-secondary education, career development, college information (scholarships, financial aid, career programs, colleges, application processes) and testing (PSAT, ACT). HVA counselors work as a team in cooperation with faculty, administration, support staff, parents, and community volunteers to provide these services.

The College and Career Center is dedicated to providing opportunities for college and career exploration for all students. Through individual and group meetings, classroom lessons, college visits and workshops and parent information workshops, our goal is for every student to understand the steps to take to be college and career ready.

Information about the school counseling program is provided to the study body on a regular basis by way of the school counseling webpage, the student's canvas account, announcements, the counseling Remind App, school messenger, and the school counseling twitter account.

The Tennessee School Counseling Standards are organized in three broad domains: academic development, social and emotional development, and college and career readiness. These domains promote the attitudes, knowledge, skills and experience that enhance the learning process and create a culture of college and career readiness for all students.
