• Mr. Tyler Guthrie

    Director of Bands

Tyler Guthrie serves as the Director of Bands at Powell High School, where he brings a passionate, student-focused approach to leading one of East Tennessee’s most vibrant high school music programs. A native of Dickson, Tennessee and graduate of Creek Wood High School, Mr. Guthrie earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. During his time at UT, he was deeply involved in the Pride of the Southland Band, one of the most storied collegiate marching bands in the country.

As a member and later a leader in the Pride of the Southland Band, Mr. Guthrie performed at SEC football games, nationally televised events, and high-profile parades, including appearances at the Orange Bowl and the College Football Playoffs. He served as a Black Suit, one of the band’s highest leadership roles, responsible for upholding tradition, mentoring younger members, and ensuring musical and visual excellence across the ensemble. His time with the "Pride" helped shape his philosophy of teaching—valuing structure, pride in performance, and the power of community within a band program.

At Powell High School, Mr. Guthrie applies the same high standards and traditions of excellence instilled in him by his mentors at UT. He believes that music education is about more than just performance—it’s about creating opportunities for growth, leadership, and lifelong friendships. His vision includes expanding the band’s presence in the community, increasing student access to honor band and clinic opportunities, and cultivating a supportive and high-achieving band culture.
