• National Honor Society serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

Membership in National Honor Society is open to high school juniors and seniors (with specific GPA requirements) for initial consideration. Current juniors have been sent an email with an application and received notice of their acceptance on October 30. NHS application portal is closed for the 2023-2024 school year.

NOTE: Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (from middle school) does not transfer to high school National Honor Society.

National Honor Society Meetings will take place during Study Hall on September 8, October 6, November 3, December 8, February 9, March 8 and March 22.

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will be on April 3, 2024 and open to individuals that complete the requirements and a formal invitation.

    Please Note:

When deciding if an activity qualifies as community service, be aware that if any activity or experience is part of an earned high school credit (such as ACTS, Peer Tutoring, Teaching as a Profession, or a Health Science course), the activity does not qualify as an activity for community service. If you have questions about community service, please email Mrs. Sanford at

Important Note

  • Note: You or your parents might receive an invitation to join an organization called the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS)- this is NOT the same as the National Honor Society, and is NOT affiliated with our school. NSHSS works with "educational organizations" to locate students, but neither HVA nor Knox County Schools are educational organizations that work with NSHSS or provide any information to that organization.
