In 2021, the Tennessee Department of Education announced that 176 schools across the state were chosen for the second cohort of Trauma-Informed Schools. These schools are recognized for emphasizing teaching strategies that recognize the role trauma can play in students' lives. Three schools were chosen to be in this cohort from Knox County: Sarah Moore Greene Magnet Academy, Adrian Burnett Elementary School and Vine Middle Magnet School. By applying, we committed to a two-year development process with the state. Educators at Adrian Burnett received training and resources to implement trauma-informed strategies. This allowed us to really work to ensure our students feel safe and loved in our school building. We know that in order to learn, both of those need to be characteristics of each classroom.
Also in 2021, Adrian Burnett was selected to participate in NIET's pilot cohort for their ACED Program. ACED's tools and resources are used to integrate effective character development and related social-emotional learning skills into a school's instruction, culture, and climate − giving all students the opportunity for success in school and life. This was how we created our own Character Education program and developed our Core Values of Pride, Self-Discipline, Respect, and Problem Solving.
All of this work led to us receiving a Promising Practice award in 2023 from Character.org. This is a national recognition for implementing an initiative that positively impacts a school or organization’s culture.
