    It is important for children to be in school every day, unless they are sick.  The day begins at 7:45 a.m.  Your child should be in his/her seat and ready to begin the day at this time.  Children must be in school three hours and sixteen minutes to be counted present for the day; however, our normal day ends at 2:45 p.m.



    Knox County Board of Education policy allows students’ absences from school to be excused only for the following reasons:

    1. Personal illness
    2. Illness in the family temporarily requiring help from the child
    3. Death in the family, with documentation
    4. Recognized religious holidays regularly observed by persons of the student’s faith
    5. Verifiable family emergency

    Any absence not complying with the above reasons for excused absences will be considered as unexcused.  Knox County Board of Education further states, “A student may be absent, due to illness, ten days per year with written parent excuse(s).  Beyond ten days, a medical statement will be required.”

    The appropriate written excuse for absence(s) must be submitted by the parent within five days of the time the child returns to school stating the reason for being absent.  The approved, written note will be required within 5 school days to enable the status in the attendance computer to be changed from unexcused to excused.  Knox County guidelines require a statement from a medical provider for illnesses beyond ten (10) days per school year.  Students’ unexcused absences are reported to Juvenile Court. 

    A student who will be absent for an extended period of time (three weeks) due to illness or injury may receive homebound instruction.  Parents should contact the school for information regarding the procedure to follow. 



    Children may start arriving at 7:10 as supervision will be provided at the school at this time. Students arriving before 7:30 should report to the cafeteria.  Students arriving after 7:30 should report directly to their classrooms in an orderly manner. Any student arriving at school after 7:45 should report to the office to receive an admit slip to class.  The doors are locked and the building is not accessible prior to 7:10 a.m.  Please do not expose your child to danger by leaving them before 7:10 a.m.  There is NO adult supervision prior to 7:10 a.m. daily.

    Dismissal time starts at 2:45 p.m.  Car riders will collect in the cafeteria and will be dismissed from there.  We will provide each family with a brightly colored BLUE CAR TAG (you may request duplicates) with your child’s name on it to place in your dashboard. This will help keep the flow of traffic moving at dismissal, as we call your child’s name on the walkie-talkie to come out from the cafeteria and stand at an assigned cone.  If you forget your “RED CAR TAG,” you will be asked to show identification in the office in order to pick up your child.  All students should be picked up or on their way home by 3:00 p.m. – unless they have after school activities (after school day care, tutoring, etc.).  An after school child care program is available at the school.  Please call the office for details.

    If your child needs to change his/her method of getting home (i.e. from bus to car rider; or to go home with another parent), a signed and dated parent note must be sent to school.

    Prior to dismissal time, all students must be signed out in the office before leaving school.  Again, it is possible that we may ask to see proper identification.  If you check your child out of school earlier in the day, please come to the office, not the classroom, and we will call your child down from the classroom.  After 2:15, no early checkouts will be allowed, except for emergencies, due to the difficulties of communicating to the classrooms at the end of the day.  If you are unable to check your child out prior to this time, you will need to wait outside until 2:45.  Also, a pattern of routine early checkout will be addressed as a tardy situation.



    Tardiness causes you to miss vital instructions and explanations at the beginning of the day.  Traffic is always heavy from 7:20 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., and we will not exempt tardies.  Parents of students arriving at school after 7:45 a.m. must accompany their child to the office and sign their child in to school. Teachers will not be required to go over instructions for students with unexcused tardies. If a situation arises that requires early check-out, the check-out must occur prior to 2:15 p.m.  A pattern of routine early checkout is educationally inappropriate as well, and will be addressed as a tardy situation.  If tardiness becomes habitual, the principal and/or social worker will contact the parents of the student, and steps must be taken to correct the problem.  More than 3 tardies or early check-outs during a nine-week grading period will negatively affect perfect attendance awards. 

    If a student arrives late to school, they must be escorted into the office to be signed in for the day.



    If you drive your child to school, please use the car entrance and follow the signs for the car lane to the designated unloading circle. Do not drop off students in the parking lot.  For morning arrival, our bus circle also opens for car drop-off at 7:30 a.m.  Please observe our NO PARKING hours posted on both circle driveways. Cars parked in these areas during arrival / dismissal cause a major breakdown in our smooth operation. All students, with the exception of those dropped off in the bus circle, should enter the building by using the sidewalks on the car drop-off side.  If you do need to come to school during the day, please park in the visitor parking lot.



    Bus transportation for children has become an integral part of the Knox County School System.  Routes and stops are arranged by the Supervisor of Transportation. He may be contacted at 594-1550. Most of our buses will begin their routes at approximately 6:50 a.m., and most students should be home by 3:30 p.m. Check the KCS website or the school office for routes and times.

    In the event your child does not arrive home at the expected time, please call the school office immediately at 966-5848, and we will help you find your child. 

    Anytime a student needs to ride a bus other than his/her assigned bus, a dated, signed note from the parent or guardian must be sent to the principal before the change may occur.  Space must be available on the bus and both the principal and bus driver must agree to the change.  The note is good for one day only and must state the bus #’s for both morning and afternoon routes.  This policy will be strictly enforced; students will not be allowed to ride another bus without a parent/guardian note.

    Each bus is equipped with video cameras that face the children as well as the driver.  As a parent, you can also track the location of your child’s regular in-zone assigned school bus.  Not every bus has this feature, but some do. The information can be found on knoxschools.org under Families>Bus Stop Locator>Here Comes the Bus.  Riding the bus is a privilege, and students riding the bus should know that this experience is an extension of the school day.  Therefore, bus riders are expected to follow the rules and regulations regarding safety and behavior on the bus and at all bus stop locations.

                A Photo ID will still be required to enter the building.  Office staff will have to check everyone in at the front office for lunches and volunteering, and often compare it to our emergency cards.  This can be a very time-consuming process but clearly worth the effort, and we ask for your patience and cooperation in advance.  Volunteers for the classrooms must still be screened and must be scheduled by the teachers in advance.  Knox County Schools has a process for background checks for volunteers in the schools that is required.  Please, no “drop-in” volunteering, as it would require the office to interrupt the teacher to approve a visit. 



    The standards for elementary school dress reflect “common sense” and a concern for each child’s comfort, safety, cleanliness, and sense of modesty.  There is a strong relationship between neat, appropriate attire and a positive learning environment.  Apparel or appearance, which tends to draw attention to an individual rather than to a learning situation, must be avoided.

    The school administration reserves the right to determine whether a student’s attire and appearance is within acceptable limits.  In matters of opinion, the judgment of the principal/designee shall prevail.  The principal may allow exceptions for school-wide programs or special classroom activities.  The teachers and the principal will administer appropriate consequences for policy infractions.  Also, due to the wood mulch in the playground areas, please wear closed-toe shoes to school.



    STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CARRY ANY TYPE OF MEDICATON TO SCHOOL.  As a general policy, medicines are not administered to children at school.  However, in special circumstances a Medical Information Form may be obtained by parents from the school office.  This form should be filled out by both the parent and the physician prescribing the medication for the child.  Once completed, the parent must bring the form and medication to the school office and arrangements will be made for the school nurse or a teacher to administer the medication at the prescribed time.  Under no circumstance should a student transport medication to school.



    Farragut Primary School is very fortunate to have a school clinic available to all students most days of the week and a full-time nurse.  If emergency medical treatment is necessary, the parents will be contacted.  If it is determined that a child is ill (fever, vomiting, severe headache), the parent will be notified and will be expected to pick the child up.  Please make sure up-to-date emergency information is on file at the school office.  Your child must be fever and vomit free for 24 hours before returning to school. 



    The faculty and staff of Farragut Primary School are committed to the education of the whole child.  In order to create an environment for maximum learning, we expect students to apply the basic ideas of the Character Counts program.  These values, or pillars of character, transcend the divisions of race, creed, politics, gender and wealth.  The pillars are trust-worthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. We believe it is the role of parents and teachers working together to help children practice ways of being kind and considerate of others by following rules and respecting the property, feelings, and person of others.

    Toys and games should not be brought to school except on special occasions announced by the teacher. Party invitations will not be distributed at school and birthday parties will not be held at school.  Each classroom teacher will post classroom rules in his/her room and discuss appropriate behaviors at the beginning of the year and as often as necessary to promote a positive classroom environment. A copy of these rules and expectations will be sent home within the first two weeks of school.  Most violations of classroom or school rules will be handled by the classroom teacher. However, it is sometimes necessary for the principal or assistant principal to provide assistance or support. If a child is sent to the office, the principal or assistant principal will decide on the appropriate consequence for the behavior. Consideration will be given to:


    1. The nature of the misconduct
    2. Any unusual circumstance
    3. The frequency of misconduct issues
    4. The number of times sent to the office

    Consequences may be any or a combination of the following: 

    1. Loss of privileges
    2. Time out or isolation
    3. Written or verbal contact with the parent or guardian
    4. Counseling by principal or assistant principal
    5. Administrator, teacher, parent conference
    6. Personal Accountability Class / PAC in the Office
    7. Parent visitation in the classroom
    8. Suspensionfrom school

    In the event a student has difficulty maintaining appropriate behavior, every effort will be made to work with parents in developing a program appropriate for the student, including rewards as well as consequences.



    Both breakfast and lunch are served at FPS. Students eating breakfast at school should arrive by 7:25 a.m.  Students may bring lunches from home.  Please do not send glass containers to school for any reason.  Milk is available for purchase in the school cafeteria. You may pay for meals online at www.k12paymentcenter.com.

    About the account:

    • There is a convenience fee ($1.95) charged for making a payment, but amount of payment is not limited (month, week, etc.)
    • There is no charge for viewing a student's purchase history
    • Parents can continue to pay by check or cash in the school cafeteria if they so choose

    Parents may also apply online for a free or reduced lunch waiver at lunchapplication.com.

    Students are assigned a “PIN” (personal identification number) that is used daily to account for breakfast/lunch usage/payment.  This PIN tracks the student’s individual cafeteria account.  Parents may deposit as much money in the child’s account as they wish, but we do encourage parents to pay for at least one week’s worth of lunches at one time.



    Our school will officially sponsor one major fund-raising campaign each year.  This annual fundraiser will begin in September.  The SCHOOL COUPON BOOKS will be sold by all Knox County Schools during this period.  Our school keeps $8 from each book sold.  Our school Leadership Team will determine the use of profits from these sales, and we will publicize this information.  Please encourage your neighbors and relatives to reserve their coupon purchases for Farragut Primary School this school year.  (note:  Farragut Primary PTA may have more than one fundraiser during the school year, for example, the “FPS Fall Festival” and the “FPS PTA Mother and Son Valentine’s Dance” in the spring.)



    Individual school portraits will be scheduled for fall.  Group and individual portraits will be made during the second semester.  More detailed information will be sent home at a later date after all plans have been finalized.



    The taxpayers of Tennessee provide our textbooks.  Students are fully responsible for the care of all textbooks which are issued to them.  Parents will be assessed replacement costs if books are lost or damaged.



    School report cards will be sent at the end of each grading period. The report card will inform you of your child’s academic achievement, work habits, behavior and attendance for that grading period.  Interim Reports are sent every four and a half weeks.  In Kindergarten, parents will receive the first official report at the end of the first nine weeks.  Please sign these reports and return them to school the next day. Report cards will be supplemented by parent/teacher conferences or by other written reports to parents. Teachers will regularly send home samples of each student’s work to be signed by a parent and returned to school. This practice assures that you are informed and kept up to date on your child’s progress.





    • DISTRICT AND SCHOOL WEBSITE – The Knox County website is knoxschools.org, and it has a tremendous amount of information at your fingertips.
    • CLASS NEWSLETTERS - Teachers will send home regular communication outlining information about the happenings in their room. Please look for a newsletter or some other approved type of written communication every week or so, based on your grade level’s procedure. 
    • PTA NEWSLETTER - The PTA also publishes a newsletter every nine weeks.
    • SCHOOLMESSENGER – The information above is used to make an emergency or special notification call to parents on our School Messenger mass calling system. In the event of a snow day, an unusual occurrence at school, or even a special upcoming event, you may receive a computerized phone call from the principal or the Knox County Schools Superintendent.
    • TELEPHONE - The school phone is a business phone and is to be used only for that purpose. No student will be allowed to use the phone unless given permission by the teacher or office personnel.  A student cannot be called out of class to talk on the phone, except in case of emergency.  If you need to speak with a teacher, please call the office, and we will leave a message for the teacher to contact you.  He/she will return your call, if needed, at the first opportunity, unless it is an emergency.  Thanks for your patience and understanding that phone calls during school take time away from the students’ instruction, and we must protect our very valuable teaching time.  If a student forgets his/her homework/items, we will not call and interrupt classroom instruction.  The work/items will be put in the teachers’ mailbox and given to the student when the mailbox is checked for the day.  The only item we will call the classroom for is a student’s lunch or lunch money. 
    • PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES - We strongly encourage communication between parent and teacher. In order to facilitate conferences, we ask that you make your request, in writing, to the teacher.  Parents are discouraged from calling teachers at home.  Your homeroom teacher will invite and encourage you to sign up for a formal Parent-Teacher conference from late September to mid-November, on designated dates.




    EMERGENCY CARD – A “Student Information Verification Form” will come home the first week of school for you to complete.  The information completed on this document is used to create an emergency card in the office and the clinic and provides the teacher and administration with contact information.  Emails and phone numbers must be updated if they change.  If a child becomes ill or hurt, we must be able to contact someone based on this emergency information.  If you have child custody information of which you feel we need to be aware, please be sure to provide legal documentation for our files.


    TRANSFER OPTION – Under the Tennessee State Board of Education’s Unsafe School Choice Policy, any public school student who is the victim of a violent crime as defined under Tennessee Code Annotated 40-38-111(g), or the attempt to commit one of these offenses as defined under Tennessee Code Annotated 39-12-101, shall be provided an opportunity to transfer to another grade-level appropriate school within the district.  Additional information regarding this option may be obtained by contacting Brian Hartsell, Supervisor of Transfers, at (865) 594-1502.


    WHAT TO LEAVE HOME - Anything not needed for class should not be brought to school.  Cameras, cell phones, radios, CD players, I-pods, skateboards, pets, candy, gum, trading cards, electronic games, and toys of any kind should not be brought to school unless the teacher gives permission for these to be brought to class only.  Anything that tends to distract students from focusing on the teacher and the curriculum is not appropriate for an elementary school environment.  Personal cell phones or other smart technology communication devices (i.e. smart watches) will be confiscated; however, students can have a cell phone in their backpack turned off if needed for afterschool purposes.  Each student will be provided with a Dell Chromebook for the district 1:1 initiative; however, students are not allowed to bring their own devices for in-school use.  Fireworks, firearms, knives, matches, tobacco of all types, alcohol, illegal drugs, and medication (of any kind in the hands of children) are illegal on school property, and possession will result in serious consequences.


    FIELD TRIPS - Teachers are encouraged to incorporate curriculum-appropriate field trips in your child’s educational program.  Costs of field trips are calculated to pay for themselves, and if for some reason your child does not get to go, the school is unable to refund your child’s money.  Detailed information will be sent home by the teacher for every field trip.  Make sure that your child’s written permission slip is on file one week before the filed trip date, along with the money.  Students are required to ride the bus both to and from the trip destination.  The Emergency Cards described above will be taken on the trip by the teacher.  On the day of any field trip, your child must be at school on time, even if the parent is a chaperone.  Official paperwork and checks for buses and venues are written based on attendance in the classroom at 7:45, and tardiness may keep your child from attending the trip.


    FIRE/EMERGENCY DRILLS - The system for exiting the building, as well as other procedures, will be discussed and rehearsed periodically and practiced regularly.  These drills should be taken seriously.


    EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING - During inclement weather, and if the possibility of school closing is apparent, do not hesitate to come and pick up your child.  It is not necessary to call the office beforehand.  We recommend you wait for a School Messenger to be sent out or check with local news stations for the official closing.  Be aware that bus routes could be reduced or cancelled due to snow and ice.  Refer to the Knox County Schools website.  If school is closed, our School Messenger system will be initiated, and you will get a call, based on the information you provide on the Student Information Verification form that you will also get at the beginning of the school year.


    PTA  - Show your support for the school by joining the PTA.  Recognizing that parent and family involvement increases student success, the PTA seeks to help the school reach its objectives in educating our children.  The school office can put you in touch with the PTA if you have questions or would like to be involved.  PTA newsletters and information on upcoming events are sent home throughout the year.  You can also keep up with the latest PTA news by joining the “Farragut Primary PTA” page on Facebook. 


    VOLUNTEERS – Volunteers are an important asset to our school.  Volunteers will be scheduled by teachers, based on classroom needs, so be sure to sign up with your child’s homeroom teacher at the beginning of each year.  Please know that there is a security screening process involved if you want to volunteer in the school, that once completed, is valid for six years.


    PARTIES - Two class parties are planned annually, by the “room parents,” with the approval and guidance of the teacher and principal.  Requesting birthday parties or delivering balloons, stuffed animals, or any other items to school for your child are educationally distracting and cannot be allowed.  We apologize for having to restrict this, but it is simply not logistically practical with our increased enrollment. With prior teacher approval, however, parents may bring an approved, healthy treat to be shared at lunchtime.  Giving out invitations at school to outside of school parties is only allowed if all students in your child’s classroom are invited (or all boys or all girls may be invited).


    GUIDANCE - We have a trained guidance counselor here five days per week to do classroom, small group, and individual counseling with students.  Please contact the office if you desire a parent conference or consultation, and she will return your call.

    LOST and FOUND - We maintain a lost and found at our school. Many expensive and useful items are left in our lost and found. Due to sheer volume, we donate all left over items to charity at the end of each semester. Be sure to label all clothing and personal items with your child’s name.

    AWARDS-The following awards will be given at the end of each grading period. 

    • CHARACTER COUNTS: Each grading period, the focus will be on a different pillar of character. The first 9 weeks- “Responsibility”, 2nd “Caring”, 3rd “Respect”, and 4th “Trustworthy”.
    • PERFECT ATTENDANCE: This will be recognized for each student who has perfect attendance for each of the 9-week grading periods. This would exclude students who were tardy 3 or more times during that 9 weeks.
    • OUTSTANDING BEHAVIOR: Students will be recognized for maintaining an A/E in behavior in all classes, including encore classes.
    • MOST IMPROVED (K-2) – This is a student who has shown the most improvement over the grading period.

                      If a student has a temperature of 100.4 or above, they will be required to go home.  Bus riders will begin arriving at 7:00 AM and will have their temperature checked upon arrival.  Car riders and walkers will arrive at 7:15 AM and have their temperature checked upon arrival.  Masks must be worn upon entering the building.  Students who arrive prior to 7:30 AM will wait, socially distanced as possible, in designated grade level hallways and will be monitored by staff. 

                Parents on property must wear a mask and practice social distancing.  Only students and staff will be allowed in the building.  Visitors will be permitted in the building by appointment only, and a screener and temperature check will be completed upon arrival.



                      Students will be required to wear a mask through the breakfast line, but may remove their mask once seated at a table and socially distanced from others. 



                      Bus transporation will be provided by KCS.  Parents should check their child’s temperature prior to boarding bus.  Social distancing should occur at the bus stops.  Masks must be worn on the bus.  Student temperatures will be taken at school upon arrival.



                      FPS will follow cleaning procedures and expectgations as stated in the KCS Reopening Guide.  Our custodial team and staff will collaborate on a daily basis on the disinfecting needs of the school.



                      Every student will receive a Chromebook.  Parents are required to complete the device form.  No device will be sent home with any student attending at school learning without completed forms.  Insuruance information is available online, and it is available at $30 per device.  Students are not allowed to bring their own devices for in-school use.  All policies from the KCS Elementary Virtual Learning Program Student/Parent handbook will be applied at FPS.  More information may be found at https://www.knoxschools.org/connect.



                      Students must wear masks as social distancing may not be possible.  Staff members will be on duty in the designated dismissal areas.  Parents on property must wear masks and practice social distancing.






                Field trips will not be scheduled during the first semester.  We will review mid-year and update the plan as needed and appropriate to current health guidelines.




                FPS will follow the expectations as stated in the KCS Reopening Guide.  Students will be expected to and will be given the opportunity to wash and sanitize hands throughout the day.  Each classroom will have a hand sanitizer station for student use.  Student temperatures will be checked upon arrival into the building.  Additional temperature checks may be done throughout the day.



                      Masks will be worn to lunch and while in the lunch serving line.  Masks may be removed once seated.  Social distancing will be practiced to the greatest extent possible.  Students will handwash prior to and after lunch.  Surfaces will be santized and cleaned between classes by staff/custodians.  No lunch visitors will be permitted.



                Students must wear masks upon entering the building, in hallways, during transitions, during small groups, and as needed in the classroom.  Students will not be required to wear masks during lunch or recess.  Students should bring a mask form home.  Masks will be be provided with a one-time reusable mask at the beginning of school if needed.  Any parent on school property must wear a mask and practice social distancing.



    Students will wear mask as they transition to recess, and they may remove the mask at recess so long as social distancing is possible.



                      Restrooms and water fountains will be sanitized daily.  Masks should be worn to the restroom and while in the restroom.  Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles instead of using the water fountains.  The refillable water stations will be used for refill use only as the drinking portion of those stations will be closed off.



                      Students will be socially distanced to the greatest extent possible. When six feet of social distancing cannot be achieved, masks must be worn.  During lunch, social distancing will be implemented to the greatest exten possible, though six feet might not be possible.





                      Access to the school building is restricted to KCS personnel and those visitors with a scheduled appointment as stated in the KCS Reopening Plan.  Appointments may be scheduled for business that cannot be conducted via telephone, email, or virtual setting.  Visitors will be required to complete the screener, have a temperature check and wear a mask.  Visitors will not be allowed past the main office at any time.  Classroom volunteers and lunch visitors will not be allowed until further notice.
