Excellence for Every Child

About the Knox County Board of Education

The Knox County Schools system operates within policies set by a nine-member Board of Education. Board Members are elected by district to a four-year term. Their constituency includes residents from the City of Knoxville, Knox County and the Town of Farragut. This body provides direction and oversight for all public schools within the county. The Superintendent is appointed by the Board of Education and serves as the chief executive officer of the school system.

The Knox County Board of Education's mission is "to advocate Excellence for All Children by serving Knox County as the governing body for public education."

Legislative Priorities

With higher academic standards, innovative instructional initiatives and intensive accountability, Tennessee has become a national leader in public education reform. In order to maintain this leadership position, accelerate our achievements and ensure that every child in the Volunteer State receives a high quality education, the Knox County Board of Education adopts a legislative agenda.

Board Meeting Agendas

The agenda for Board of Education meetings is developed by the Board Chair and the Superintendent.  Staff members or citizens of the district may suggest items for the agenda.

Speaking at Public Form

Each meeting has a public forum in which citizens may speak to the Board about any education-related concerns they may have. Public forum held at work sessions immediately prior to a regular monthly meeting, mid-month work sessions, and called or special meetings are limited to topics on the respective meeting agendas. Other public forums are open to any topic. Interested persons may sign up to speak by contacting the Board Executive Assistant no later than 12:00 noon on the meeting date at 594-1630 or by arriving at the meeting five minutes early to sign up with the Board Chair, Vice Chair or Executive Assistant.
Citizens addressing issues to the Board of Education during public forum have five minutes in which to do so. If a Board member wishes, he or she may ask the full board to extend that time in increments of one minute. Persons speaking at public forum must address the board chair and not individual board members or school staff members. They must also refrain from making personal reference to individual board or staff members. As a matter of order, members of the Board will not respond to persons addressing the Board, but may ask the superintendent to act or gather additional information.
