Excellence for Every Child

Welcome to West Valley Middle School

   Home of the Wolves!

 The Importance of Middle School
* Rigorous math classes in middle school correlate with higher academic achievement in high school for African-American students.
   (University of Illinois study, 2009)
* By late elementary school, students' ability to "read to learn" increasingly contributes to their overall academic success (Chall and others)
* Effective intervention for students with learning disabilities at the middle school level is directly correlated with greater academic achievement later
   (Batya Elbaum & Sharon Vaughn)
*"Now is widely recognized that during the middle grades we have the best chance to keep students on the path to graduation and prepared for success  in college
and career.  These students deserve the best we have to offer."
Betty Edwards, Executive Director, National Middle School Association
*"The level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness by the time they graduate from   high school than anything that happens in high school."
From The Forgotten Middle by ACT, 2009
