Read the Most from Coast to Coast Challenge

On February 27th Karns Elementary will participate with schools across the country in Renaissance Learning’s Read the Most from Coast to Coast reading challenge. This one-day event encourages students to read as much as they can; last year’s record was 4, 987,949 books read. Students will also take AR quizzes on the books they read. Karns is also going to have a Pajama Day on February 27 and all students who participate will get a Certificate of National Participation. Our librarians will be tracking our reading throughout the day and giving students updates on both our school and national progress. We are super excited about this opportunity to encourage a love of reading in all our students.

  • Please remember during these winter months that our safety patrols may not be on duty when the temperatures and/or wind chill are at a dangerously low level. We try to have them out on a rotating basis on frigid mornings, but this means fewer students are available to open car doors. Please have your children ready to exit and if a safety patrol is not present to open the door, have your child go ahead and exit the car. There will always be an adult on duty to monitor students’ arrival. Thank you!

  • Winter months means snow and inclement weather are a real possibility. Please listen to the weather and school closings in the mornings on either the radio or television. Our school system will send out a phone message when school is closed or delayed, but some of you may not have this feature turned on for your account or have the wrong phone number listed with our school. If school is delayed for an hour, the building will open at 8:10 a.m.  If school is delayed two hours, the building will open at 9:10 a.m.

Also, please make sure your child’s teacher knows exactly how your child will go home if school closes early due to inclement weather. Our phone lines jam quickly in an emergency of this type. Please have a consistent plan ready, whether it is car, bus, or daycare and make certain your child’s teacher knows how your child is to go home. You may want to check with your after school provider because some of these businesses do not pick up when school is dismissed early. You will need to make arrangements NOW in the event that this happens. Hopefully we will not be faced with early dismissal, but we must plan for it just in case. Thank you!

  • Students who need to be checked out early must be checked out before 2:15 p.m.  No students will be dismissed after this time.  Thank you!
