KCS IS 1:1
KCS is a 1:1 district, meaning every student has a district-issued chromebook. These laptops will be the preferred device for meeting most—if not all—of students’ technology needs in the classroom.
Below are resources aimed at helping students, families, and staff get acquainted with tools offered through our 1:1 initiative, which provides a device to every K-12 student.
Included in each section are a variety of resources for some of the main systems being used across the district: Aspen Parent Portal, Canvas, Chromebooks/Google, Microsoft Teams, Givebacks (online payments), and ParentSquare.

Aspen Parent Portal
Aspen
Aspen is a secure, web-based school information management system. The York County School Division uses Aspen to maintain student educational records such as enrollment history, student directory information, attendance, student schedules and health data in accordance with state law. All parents are also provided an Aspen Family Portal account when a student enrolls in the division.
With Aspen Family Portal, parents can:
- View students' schedules, including a list of his/her teachers
- Monitor students' official grades
- Review attendance information
- Review emergency contact information
Canvas

Canvas is an easy-to-use, cloud-based learning management system that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers and students use daily.
With Canvas,
- Teachers can post all their class content in one place, including a calendar for due dates, links to class resources like videos, posted homework assignments (and a drop-box for turning it in), etc.
- Students can see all their assignments, due dates, and class materials in one place. They can turn in assignments and see teacher feedback.
- Parents can "observe" their student's progress and performance in each class.
Please note that the official KCS gradebook will continue to be located in Aspen. Grades in Canvas may not reflect the final grade for a course.

ParentSquare is an easy-to-use communication tool that combines multiple communication streams into one interface for families and staff. Accounts are automatically generated for each parent/guardian using the primary email address and phone number given to your child’s school office.
You can use ParentSquare on any device. You can download the free mobile app for iOS or Android or use the desktop version at parentsquare.com.
With ParentSquare, parents can:
- Receive information from the school via email, text, phone call, or mobile app notification
- Two-way messaging with translation between staff and families
- Choose to receive information as it comes, or all at once at 6 p.m. daily
- Communicate in your preferred language
