ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Knox County is a richly diverse community and KCS families speak more than 120 languages and represent 130 countries.

Knox County Schools is proud to operate a Welcome Center where Family Community Liaisons assist families with no or limited English proficiency with the enrollment process, provide other important information about district policies, and make referrals to support services outside the school system.

A dedicated team of English Language (EL) teachers works tirelessly to guide our active English learners in their classrooms toward fluency and academic success. The KCS Migrant Education program (also known as Title I-C) offers supplemental educational programs to help migrant students and their families.

The Newcomer Academy will offer a specialized, research-based curriculum designed for 6th-10th grade beginner English learners in their first year at an American school. Programming will focus on intensive language and academic skill development, prepare students for a smooth transition to mainstream classrooms, and encourage meaningful community engagement.

Enrollment / Transfers

Knox County Schools assigns students to schools based on the address of the family's primary residence. The school zone search tool can be used to help find your child’s zoned school.

Preschool options are available for children as young as 4-years-old, and students can enroll in Kindergarten if they turn 5-years-old on or before August 15 of the current school year.

School transfers may be requested if a family wishes for their student to attend a school different from their zoned school.

Nutrition

A balanced and nourishing diet is crucial for students’ overall well-being and academic success. We take a proactive approach to ensure that no student goes hungry and that all students have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their financial circumstances.

The price for breakfast across all grade levels is $2.25. Lunch is $3.25 in our elementary schools, and $3.50 in our middle and high schools. Payments may be made online (by credit, debit, or ACH) or at a school cafeteria via cash or check.

Many of our students purchase free or reduced-price meals and some schools are part of the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) that provides each of their students to receive free breakfast and lunch each day.

The nutrition department uses LINQ Connect for online meal payments, online free and reduced applications, and interactive menus.
