Bearden Middle Science Olympiads

In this wonderful School that is called Bearden Middle, there are many different kinds of teams and clubs like the basketball team, step team, rec football team, and Dungeons & Dragons club. But one of them is completely different from the rest: it is The Science Olympiad team. This team is very interesting. We don't learn about sports or do any activities like active stuff, but we do science and engineering. This team is a big family with many different members of many different kinds. WE  ACCEPT ALL.

In the Science Olympiad you come in on Saturdays for our Events that you sign up for. You will learn about many different topics so you can compete in the events. Events include Dynamic planet, Ecology, Optics, Road Scholar, Codebusters, Anatomy, Wind Power, Meteorology, Metric Mastery, Fossils, Microbe, Mission, Entomology, Disease Detectives, and Air Trajectory. On Thursdays we have a weekly Meetup to talk about Saturdays’ plans and different things coming up.

Events And Their Meaning

Ecology-  The ecology Is where you learn about the study of plants and animals And how they live in ecosystems in different types of ecosystems

Optics and Science Olympiad is where you're using mirrors to guide a laser to a point. You have a partner.

Codebusters- Students will be tested on their ability to decode encrypted messages using cryptanalysis techniques and show skills with ciphers by decrypting a series of messages.”credit

Anatomy-In this event, participants will be assessed on their understanding of the anatomy and physiology for the human Integumentary, Muscular, and Skeletal systems “credit

Wind Power- Teams construct a blade assembly device prior to the tournament that is designed to capture wind power and complete a written test on the principles of alternative energy”.credit

Meteorology-  “The focus of Meteorology rotates between three topics: Everyday Weather, Severe Storms, and Climate. Each of these three topics spends one year as the focus before being replaced by the next topic in the rotation.” credit

Metric Mastery- Welcome to Metric Mastery! In this event, teams will estimate and then measure properties of identical objects including mass, area, volume, density, force, distance, time, and temperature.”credit

Fossils- Welcome to Fossils! In this event, teams identify and classify fossils and demonstrate their knowledge of ancient life. Tasks will be related to interpretation of past environments and ecosystems, adaptations, evolutionary relationships, and the use of fossils in dating and correlating rock units.Credit.

Microbe, Mission- This is a HYBRID/LAB event. Teams will answer questions, solve problems, and analyze data pertaining to microbes. Topics include: microscope, bacteria, etc. Up to 2 students per team”.credit.

Entomology-  “Welcome to Entomology! In this event, students will be asked to identify insects and select immature insects by order and family, answer questions about insects, and use or construct a dichotomous key”.credit

Disease detectives- ”Disease Detectives is an event in Division B and Division C that focuses on epidemiology, the study of the distribution and determinants of health conditions in specified populations and the application of that study to control those health problems”.credit.

Air Trajectory-  DESCRIPTION: Teams will design, construct, and calibrate a device capable of launching a projectile into a target area and collect data to develop a series of graphs related to the capabilities of the” credit

What Events Look Like

On Saturday there will be an online schedule that will tell you where you need to be on the student canvas page for Science Olympiad. You will pick out the things that you would like to do before Saturday. On Sunday, you will need to be there at 9:00 a.m. You'll need to be picked up about 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. it depends on events that you've chosen, or earlier. You will go to Ms. Kenny's room, and you will usually look at the schedule that is on the board, where you'll see where to go for your events. Events usually look like there's going to either be a teacher in a room teaching you, where you have either a homework  worksheet or we'll be building something. It really depends on the event that you have and what you'll be doing. If you join us there is our own t-shirt that our team captain designed. There also be option to download GroupMe and they'll be a groupchat for the kids and the main chat for all the parents to join.

Science Olympiad is a lot of fun! I really hope you consider it and if you think you might want to join- contact Ms Kenny.
