Author and KCS Alumnus Returns to Knox County to Speak with Students
Former journalist and Knox County Schools alumnus Dan Kilday will visit with Knox County students on Monday, May 7 at 8:30 a.m. at Gresham Middle and noon at Gibbs Elementary to entertain students and hopefully inspire them to consider what it takes to be a good journalist in our society. Kilday tackles the subject of freedom of the press and more in his new children’s book, Molly Warner: School Reporter.
Molly Warner, the book’s protagonist, is a sixth-grade student at Robert K. Howard Middle School and has a wide reputation for being a gossip. Her gossip was so prevalent, it led to the creation of a new school policy that teachers privately referred to as “The Molly Warner Rule.” Rather than punishing Molly, the school principal places her on the newspaper staff to put her gossiping skills to good use. With help from her journalism teacher, she learns the importance of a free press and strives to be a great reporter. When strange things start happening at the school, Molly resolves to find the real story behind what is going on and who is to blame. She had no idea what she’d uncover and the journey it would take her on.
Kilday attended Rocky Hill Elementary and Gresham Middle before graduating from Central High School in 1997. He worked as a television anchor and reporter for local stations in three states and currently lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and three children.
