Excellence for Every Child
Beaumont Magnet Academy is partnering with Cirque du Soleil to create circus-themed art, which will be on display at Thompson Boiling Arena during performances of Corteo on April 20-22, 2018.
Beaumont art teacher Cheryl Burchett reached out to Cirque du Soleil in December when she first heard that the circus troupe would be touring in Knoxville in the spring. Cirque du Soleil responded, suggesting the students make art inspired by the show and asking if the school could put up an art display during the Knoxville performances. Since that time, Beaumont students have been immersed in all things circus.
“This partnership has been such a perfect fit for our arts magnet program. I’ve been working with the theater teacher to help the students understand what makes Cirque du Soleil so unique. Once the visual art is finished, I hope to do some circus lessons that also incorporate our dance and music programs,” Burchett said.
Following the Cirque du Soleil performances, the students’ art will be displayed at the Knox County Dance Showcase on May 4-6, and later at Beaumont for the school’s final exhibit night on May 22. This school-wide art and project-based learning exhibit will also be a celebration for Beaumont’s $100,000 art playground grant.
During that celebration, all Beaumont students will share their circus art with the community and celebrate the Cirque du Soleil partnership with a circus parade around the newly renovated BMA Arts Playground.
