David Claxton Appointed Principal of West Valley Middle School
 
David Claxton has been appointed Principal at West Valley Middle School, where he is currently serving as the interim principal. Mr. Claxton joined the Knox County Schools as a social studies teacher at Vine Middle School in 1998. In 1999, Mr. Claxton was hired as a social studies teacher at Powell High School, and then went on to South-Doyle High School where he spent many years teaching social studies as well as serving as a TAP mentor teacher. He has served as an assistant principal at West Valley Middle School since 2012. Mr. Claxton holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and a Master of Science degree in Education both from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He also holds an Educational Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University.

Ashley Jessie Appointed Principal of West High School
 
Ashley Jessie has been appointed the Principal of West High School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. Jessie is currently serving as the principal at Holston Middle School. She entered education in 2000 as a 5th grade language arts and math teacher in Jefferson County and joined the Knox County Schools in 2002 as a language arts teacher at Holston Middle School. Ms. Jessie entered administration in 2010 when she was appointed as an assistant principal at Holston Middle School. Ms. Jessie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Carson-Newman University, a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Tusculum College and an Educational Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University.

Shannon Jackson Appointed Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction
 
In addition to these school leadership positions, I have appointed Shannon Jackson as the Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction to fill the vacancy created by Millicent Smith's resignation. Ms. Jackson began her career with the Knox County Schools as an English teacher at West High School in 1998. After many years of distinguished teaching, Ms. Jackson joined the Central Office in 2012 to hold a supervisory position within the Curriculum & Instruction Department. Ms. Jackson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in College Scholars and a Master of Science degree in Curriculum & Instruction both from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Michelle Wolfenbarger Appointed Principal of Adrian Burnett Elementary School
 
Michelle Wolfenbarger has been appointed Principal of Adrian Burnett Elementary School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. Wolfenbarger began teaching with the Knox County Schools as a fourth grade teacher at Adrian Burnett Elementary in 2001, and has also taught fourth grade at Carter Elementary School and language arts at Holston Middle School. In 2012, Ms. Wolfenbarger became a district-wide Elementary Literacy Coach, and in 2013, she was appointed a TAP Master teacher at Ritta Elementary School. Ms. Wolfenbarger was a fellow in the fifth cohort of the Leadership Academy with a placement at Brickey-McCloud Elementary, and has been serving as the Assistant Principal at Adrian Burnett Elementary since the beginning of the current school year. Ms. Wolfenbarger holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master's degree in Education from the University of Tennessee. She also holds an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership also from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Shawnda Ernst Appointed of Principal of Ritta Elementary School
 
Shawnda Ernst has been appointed the Principal of Ritta Elementary School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. Ernst joined the Knox County Schools as a first grade teacher at Beaumont Elementary and Pond Gap Elementary in 1996. She also served as a TAP Master Teacher at Pond Gap Elementary, and, in 2011, was appointed Assistant Principal. Ms Ernst was appointed Assistant Principal at Ritta Elementary in 2013 and also served as interim Principal for a significant portion of this school year. Ms. Ernst holds both a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a Master of Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as well as an Educational Specialist Degree from Lincoln Memorial University.

Brandi Self Appointed Principal of Mooreland Heights Elementary School
 
Brandi Self has been appointed Principal of Mooreland Heights Elementary School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. Self joined the Knox County Schools in 1998 as a fourth grade teacher at Mooreland Heights Elementary School. She was appointed Assistant Principal at Mooreland Heights Elementary School in 2015 and is currently serving as Interim Principal. Ms. Self holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child Development from Maryville College. She also holds a Master of Science Degree in Educational Administration from Lincoln Memorial University.

Amy Brace Appointed Principal of Sarah Moore Greene Elementary SChool
 
Amy Brace has been appointed Principal of Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year. Ms. Brace joined the Knox County Schools in 1992 as a Physical Education teacher at Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School. She was appointed as a Magnet Program Lead Educator in 2007 and in 2008 was appointed as Assistant Principal at Inskip Elementary School. In 2011, Ms. Brace was appointed as the Assistant Principal of Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School and in 2012 she was appointed Principal of Lonsdale Elementary where she will continue to serve through the end of the school year. Ms. Brace holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education, a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Administration and Supervision, all conferred by the University of Tennessee.

Susan Espiritu Appointed Principal of Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School
 
In order to sustain the progress and momentum at Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School and provide continuity in leadership, Susan Espiritu has been named as the part-time Co-Principal of Sarah Moore Greene, effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year, after retiring as the Executive Principal of the school. She began her career with Knoxville City Schools in 1979 as a teacher at Belle Morris Elementary School. Ms. Espiritu has also served at Northwest Middle School, Beaumont Elementary School, and Gibbs Elementary School. In addition to serving as a teacher, Ms. Espiritu was a Curriculum and Instructional Facilitator at West View Elementary School. She entered school administration when she was appointed as the Assistant Principal at Karns Elementary School in 2003. In 2004, Ms. Espiritu was appointed as Principal of Pond Gap Elementary School. Ms. Espiritu holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master's of Science degree in Administration, both conferred by the University of Tennessee. She also holds an Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University.

Wendy Hansard Appointed Principal of Lonsdale Elementary School
 
Wendy Hansard has been appointed Principal of Lonsdale Elementary School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year. Ms. Hansard joined the Knox County School in 2003 as a fourth grade teacher at Inskip Elementary School. She was appointed as a system-wide literacy coach in 2008, and, in 2011, was chosen as a Fellow in the second cohort of the Leadership Academy. Ms. Hansard was appointed the Assistant Principal of Lonsdale Elementary School in 2012 where she will continue to serve through the end of this school year. Ms. Hansard holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from Carson-Newman College. She also holds both a Master's of Science in Education Administration and an Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Tennessee.

Kathryn Lutton has been appointed Principal of Holston Middle School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. She joined the Knox County Schools as an English teacher at Fulton High School in 2004. Ms. Lutton was selected as a Fellow in the third cohort of the Leadership Academy in 2012 and placed at Bearden High School. Upon completing this program, Ms. Lutton accepted an Assistant Principal position at Central High School. Ms. Lutton holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education and Philosophy from Ball State University and a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Brad Corum Appointed Principal of Karns High School
 
Brad Corum has been appointed Principal of Karns High School. Mr. Corum is currently Principal at Karns Middle School where he has served since 2013. He joined the Knox County Schools in 1997 as a Social Studies teacher at Karns High School. He began his administrative service in 2005 as an assistant principal at Powell Middle School and has also served in this capacity at Karns Middle School and West Valley Middle Schools. Mr. Corum holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration from Lincoln Memorial University.

Janice Cook Appointed Principal of Paul Kelley Volunteer Academy
 
Janice Cook has been appointed Principal of Paul Kelley Volunteer Academy effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year. Ms. Cook joined the Knox County Schools in 1997 as a District-wide Intervention Consultant. She is currently serving as the Principal at the Knoxville Adaptive Education Center where she has served since being appointed in 2008. Ms. Cook holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Scotland. She also holds a Certification in Music and Religious Education from Morary House College of Education, also in Scotland, and a Master of Education degree in Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University.

Jason Myers Appointed Principal of Knoxville Adaptive Education Center (KAEC)
 
Jason Myers has been appointed Principal of Knoxville Adaptive Education Center (KAEC) effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year. Mr. Myers joined the Knox County Schools in 2008 as a Teaching Assistant at Fulton High School. In 2009, he became a Special Education teacher, and in 2011, he added Lead Teacher to his resume. Mr. Myers moved to West High School as an Administrative Assistant in 2012, and has held his current position of Assistant Principal since 2013. Mr. Myers holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee where he is also a Doctoral Candidate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

Leanne Hawn Appointed Principal of Career Magnet Academy
 
Leanne Hawn has been appointed Principal of Career Magnet Academy effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year. Ms. Hawn joined the Knox County Schools in 2006 as a mathematics teachers at Fulton High School. She was appointed as Administrative Assistant in 2011 at Fulton and moved to an Assistant Principal position in 2013. Ms. Hawn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Tennessee. She also holds an Educational Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Technological University and is a candidate for a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from East Tennessee State University.

Lynn White Appointed Principal of Sterchi Elementary School
 
Lynn White has been appointed Principal of Sterchi Elementary School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. White joined the Knox County Schools in 1993 as a fourth grade teacher at Chilhowee Intermediate School and went on to teach third grade at Karns Intermediate in 1996 and Hardin Valley Elementary in 2001. She was appointed Assistant Principal of Gibbs Elementary in 2013 and is currently serving as Assistant Principal of Bluegrass Elementary. Ms. White holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Tennessee Technological University. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Tennessee.

Sherry Smith has been appointed Principal of Karns Middle School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year. Ms. Smith joined the Knox County Schools in 2012 after being a teacher and administrator in Loudon County Schools for 21 years. She was appointed as Assistant Principal at South Doyle High School in 2012 and served as Interim Principal for a portion of this school year. Ms. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Middle Tennessee State University. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Tennessee Technological University and an Education Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University.

Ryan Siebe Appointed Principal of Farragut High School
 
Ryan Siebe has been appointed Principal of Farragut High School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. Mr. Siebe is currently the Principal of Carter High School where he has served since 2013. Before joining the Knox County Schools in 2000 as an English teacher at Powell Middle School, Mr. Siebe served as an English teacher at Science Hill High School in Johnson City for Summer School and as an English teacher at Unicoi County High School. He has also served as an English teacher at Farragut High School, and was a member of our inaugural class of the Principal Leadership Academy with an appointment as an assistant principal at Fulton High School in 2008. Mr. Siebe continued his leadership role as an assistant principal at both West High School and Austin-East Magnet High School. Mr. Siebe holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Milligan College and a Master of Arts degree in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Tech University. He also holds an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Tennessee.

Angela Messer Appointed Principal of Carter High School
 
Angela Messer has been appointed Principal of Carter High School effective beginning in the 2016-2017 academic year. Ms. Messer joined the Knox County Schools as a band teacher at Whittle Springs Middle School in 1997, and, later taught band/music at Bearden High School. In 2001, she began teaching band at Carter High School, and in 2008, she served as band director for Carter Middle School. Ms. Messer became a TAP Mentor Teacher at Carter High School in 2011, and in 2012, she served the district as a Professional Development Specialist. In 2013, she became a TAP Master teacher at Carter High School, and in 2014, she was accepted into the fifth cohort of the Leadership Academy with a placement at West High School. Patricia "Windy" Clayton Appointed Co-Principal of Beaumont Magnet Academy
 
Ms. Missy Beltran, Principal at Beaumont Magnet Academy, is exploring the possibility of relocating to be closer to her extended family. Since her timeline is uncertain, Ms. Clayton has been appointed co-princpal of Beaumont Magnet Academy effective beginning the 2016-2017 school year, as to ensure a smooth succession plan for when Ms. Beltran finalizes her relocation plan. Ms. Clayton joined the Knox County Schools as a Language Arts teacher at Farragut Middle School in 2005. In 2007, Ms. Clayton was appointed as Assistant Principal at South Doyle Middle School, and in 2012, she was placed in the third cohort of the Leadership Academy with an assignment at Karns Middle School. Upon completing this program, Ms. Clayton accepted an Assistant Principal position at Vine Middle School. Ms. Clayton holds both a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Human Sciences and a Master of Arts degree in Education from East Tennessee State University. She also holds an Educational Specialist degree from Lincoln Memorial University.

Andrew Brown Appointed Principal at South-Doyle Middle School
 
Andrew Brown has been appointed to serve as principal of South-Doyle Middle School for the 2016-17 school year. Mr. Brown joined the Knox County Schools in 1999 as a science teacher at Central High School. In 2004, he began teaching science at the high school level in Bristol, Tennessee, and then advanced to his current position as an elementary principal where he has been serving since 2006. Mr. Brown holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Carson-Newman University and a Master of Education degree in Educational Administrator and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Carson-Newman University.

Kelly Forester Appointed Principal of Byington-Solway Career and Technical Center
 
I have appointed Kelly Forester to be the Principal of Byington-Solway Career and Technical Center effective beginning the 2016-2017 school year. Ms. Forester began her teaching career in 1996 as a middle school English teacher at the Fort Bend Independent School District in Texas. She also served as a high school English teacher and assistant principal in the Houston Independent School District in Texas. Ms. Forester joined the Knox County Schools as an assistant principal and athletic director at Carter High School in 2004. Later, she moved to Karns High School to teach English in 2005 and became a literacy coach at Fulton High School in 2012. Her most recent position was as the Curriculum Principal at Fulton High School. Ms. Forester holds both a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Sociology from Texas A&M University and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Houston.

Carly Harrington Appointed Director of Public Affairs
 
Carly Harrington has been appointed Director of Public Affairs for the Knox County Schools effective September 1, 2016. Ms. Harrington comes to us as a seasoned journalist having gained thirteen years of experience with the Knoxville News Sentinel (KNS) while serving as a business reporter and columnist, covering local business news and features. She also working as their online producer, developing online content and managing stories on the website. Prior to the KNS, Ms. Harrington worked as a general assignment and government reporter for the Tennessean in Nashville. She was most recently employed as the Director of Branded Content at Fletcher Marketing PR in Knoxville, TN where she was responsible for managing development of content, overseeing quality assurance of content, managing communication between clients and media outlets, planning and managing social media campaigns, and mentoring junior staff as writers and content creators. Ms. Harrington holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from the University of Tennessee and was managing editor of the university's daily newspaper. She is also a board member of various local organizations such as Entrepreneurs of Knoxville, Project Help, and the Department of Student Publications with the University of Tennessee.

Kelly Drummond Appointed Director of Human Resources
 
Kelly Drummond has been appointed Director of Human Resources of the Knox County Schools effective September 26, 2016. Ms. Drummond comes to us as a seasoned management professional having gained sixteen years of experience as the Director of Human Resources and Administration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley. During her tenure there, she also spent time working as the Tennessee Alliance Liaison and Executive Director. Prior to the Boys & Girls Club, Ms. Drummond worked as a Project Manager for Community Action Committee in Knoxville. She has extensive experience in human resources management, employee relations, business compliance, strategy development, and organizational development and training. Ms. Drummond holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and a Masters of Science in Organization and Management-Human Resources from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is currently working toward completing a Doctorate of Education with a concentration in Human Resource Development from Lincoln Memorial University.

Darlene Miller Appointed Supervisor of Early Childhood Education
 
Darlene Miller has been appointed Supervisor of Early Childhood Education effective January 2017. Ms. Miller joined Knox County Schools in 1981 as a kindergarten teacher at Norwood Elementary School. She has also worked as a teacher at both Ridgedale and Brickey Elementary schools. Ms. Miller began her career in administration in 2003 as an assistant principal at Bluegrass Elementary School. She has been principal at Karns Elementary since 2008. Ms. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a master’s degree in Curriculum from Tusculum College in Greeneville and an Educational Specialist degree in Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University.

Shay Siler has been appointed Principal of Karns Elementary effective January 2017. Ms. Siler joined Knox County Schools in 2007 as an experienced first-grade teacher at Hardin Valley Elementary. She began her career in administration in 2009 as assistant principal at Carter Elementary School and was selected to be part of the Leadership Academy in 2010. She also worked as an assistant principal at Beaumont Magnet Academy. Ms. Siler is currently serving as principal at Carter Elementary School. Ms. Siler holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston; a master's degree in Educational Administration and Supervision K-12 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Jessica Birdsong Appointed as Principal of Carter Elementary School
 
Jessica Birdsong has been appointed Principal of Carter Elementary effective January 2017. Ms. Birdsong joined Knox County Schools in 2006 as an experienced special education teacher at Northwest Middle School. She served as a Special Education Consultant for three years beginning in 2008 and was selected to be part of the Leadership Academy in 2011. She also worked as an assistant principal at A.L. Lotts Elementary. Ms. Birdsong is currently serving as principal at Pleasant Ridge Elementary. Ms. Birdsong holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education from Bowling Green State University; a master's degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Montana; and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Sandra Roach Appointed Principal of Pleasant Ridge Elementary School
 
Sandra Roach has been appointed Principal of Pleasant Ridge Elementary School effective January 2017. Ms. Roach joined Knox County Schools in 1989 upon graduation from Middle Tennessee State University and worked for 15 years as an elementary education teacher. She began her career in administration in 2004 as assistant principal at Sarah Moore Greene Magnet and has worked as a supervisor for the district's magnet and Talented and Gifted (TAG) programs. She also served as principal of Corryton and Blue Grass Elementary Schools, prior to her current position as elementary staffing manager for Knox County Schools. Ms. Roach holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Middle Tennessee Stat University and a master's degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Lincoln Memorial University.

Jon Rysewyk Appointed Interim Chief Academic Officer for Knox County Schools
 
Jon Rysewyk has been appointed Interim Chief Academic Officer for Knox County Schools effective January 6, 2017. This is a temporary appointment which will expire when the new superintendent is hired. Dr. Rysewyk returns to Knox County Schools after serving more than two years as founding principal and school director of Knoxville's first charter school, Emerald Academy. He began his career with Knox County Schools in 2002 as a teacher and department head at Karns High School. He went on to become an exemplary principal at Fulton High School before serving as supervisor of secondary education for Knox County Schools, and later, executive director of innovation and school improvement. Dr. Rysewyk holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Education from the University of Tennessee, an Education Specialist degree in instructional leadership from Tennessee Technological University and a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from East Tennessee State University.
