Superintendent’s Award Presented

Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair 2015 Superintendent’s Award

The Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair (SASEF) is the premier science competition for students in middle and high school in a 23-county area of East Tennessee. Since 1952, the organization has promoted teaching the scientific method in science, engineering and math. The annual fair is sponsored by the University of Tennessee and local companies, and this year’s fair was held at UT Thompson-Boling Arena in April.

Each year, Knox County Schools Superintendent Jim McIntyre presents his Superintendent’s Award, honoring students who have excelled in the fair’s senior division. During the July 1, 2015, Knox County Board of Education meeting, Dr. McIntyre presented the Superintendent’s Award to the following students:

Sophia Cui, a rising senior at Hardin Valley Academy: Cui’s project was on Molecular Cloning and Purification of IsdB, an Attractive Vaccine Candidate against Staphylococcus aureus Infection.

Melissa Yu, a 2015 graduate of Farragut High School: Yu’s project was on Developing an Automatic Nonrigid Image Registration Algorithm for Nanoscience Research. She went on to win at the national level in her division.
