50-Foot Sub More than Lunch

On March 12, 2015, 9:00-10:30 a.m., Mooreland Heights Elementary School’s third-grade students will build a 50-foot sub sandwich in the gym, and thanks to teachers’ creativity and ingenuity, they will be learning about math and writing in the process.  Using language standards, students have written and mailed invitations to the event to members of the community, school leaders, elected officials and others, and they practice math skills of weighing, measuring and dividing during the building of the sub.  The event also is a fundraiser for the school’s Safety Patrol fifth-grade students, who are working to secure funds to attend the AAA School Safety Patrol program trip to Washington, D.C. in June.  This year’s Subway Day event is in memory of Steve Friedenstab, a teacher at Mooreland Heights who passed away in 2014 and who started the event several years ago.  The event is in partnership with Subway restaurants.
