Run for the Schools Canceled; Knoxville Zoo to Honor Free Admission on March 7

Because of continued inclement weather, significantly cold weather in the forecast and untreated roads on the 5K course, the Rusty Wallace Honda Run For The Schools scheduled for Saturday, February 28, has been canceled. The event will not be rescheduled.

"Out of an abundance of caution and concerns for the safety of participants, which includes a large number of children, we felt canceling was the best thing to do considering the ongoing weather situation in East Tennessee," said Michael Holtz, race director for Run For The Schools.

Because Run For The Schools is a fund-raiser for area schools, Holtz said planners will disperse proceeds after expenses to the schools that had participants registered for the race.

Holtz added that students, parents and teachers who registered through their schools will be able to pick up their T-shirts at their school within the next week to 10 day. Participants who registered online will be able to pick up their T-shirts at Runner's Market, 4443 Kingston Pike, from Saturday, February 28, through Saturday, March 7.

One of the perks of the event was free admission to the Knoxville Zoo for participants wearing their Run For The Schools T-shirt. The zoo will honor free admission on Saturday, March 7, for any participant with a 2015 Run For The Schools T-shirt. One additional guest will be admitted for $10.

"We apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment canceling the event may cause," Holtz said. "Thank you to everyone who registered for their support of area schools."

Any questions about the cancelation can be emailed to info@runfortheschools.org.
