Read City USA

Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs has collaborated with Read City USA, the Knox County Schools, and the Knox County Public Library to improve the literacy rates for all Knox County Schools students. Currently, only 40% of Knox County 3rd graders are considered proficient readers. Since 3rd grade is the year in which students start reading to learn, it is crucial that all 3rd graders be proficient readers or else their reading begins to impact their future pathways to success. Tomorrow afternoon, your child will bring home information on how you can participate with your child in the Read City USA program.  By committing to read 20 minutes each day with your child, you can set your child on a track that will help them in school and throughout their lives. There are numerous ways to log your reading: on the paper log coming home tomorrow, a paper Passport you can pick up from the Knox County Public Library, online at knoxlib.org/readcity, or on the Beanstack Tracker app. For every 10 hours you read, your child can pick up incentives from your nearest Knox County Library branch. The goal is to read 120 hours for the calendar year 2020. Adults and children can participate in this challenge, as there are adult incentives as well. Be a model for your child and enjoy the rewards of reading for pleasure.
