Message from the principal

April 11, 2021

Dear Sterchi families,

I hope that you have had another wonderful weekend!  Please see this week's news and announcements:  Sterchi News - April 12-16

With the coming of spring and warmer weather, life is getting busier for everyone.  Please be sure to check your child's backpack and folders daily for classroom news and updates from your child's teacher.  Also, please be sure that your child's teacher and the office have the most up-to-date contact information for your phone and email.

There is a lot of information coming from KCS and Sterchi regarding summer learning camp, virtual learning for next year, and other end-of-year news.  We want everyone to be as informed and "in the know" as possible.

Have a great week!

Monday, March 22, 2021

Dear Sterchi families,

Welcome back and Happy Spring!  I hope that everyone had a great break.  If you can believe it, we are headed into the last nine weeks of school (44 ½ days).  We are so thankful and grateful for all that our students, families, teachers and staff have done to help keep this school year moving forward as safely and healthily as possible.

Here are a few quick announcements and reminders for this week:

1. Link to last week’s SMORE newsletter:  https://www.smore.com/1f2x9

2. Summer Learning Camp – June 1 – July 9 –You may have received an email both before Spring Break and again today about your child being eligible for Summer Learning Camp.  The camp is funded by the state of Tennessee and is designed to support learning loss or gaps that may have occurred during the pandemic.  It is different from the typical summer school or ESY (Extended School Year).  Not all students received this invitation to participate. Spots are currently limited to the students who received invitations only.  Eligibility for this program was based on factors including individual student performance on state reading and math assessments, overall academic performance at specific schools, and economic challenges facing families.  It is not designed to be an enrichment program, but a support for learning gaps and loss.  Enrollment for this voluntary program begins today, March 22.  To enroll your child, please use the link in the personal email that was sent to you. For more information:  https://www.knoxschools.org/summerlearning

3.  Virtual Learning Options for 2021-2022 – KCS will be offering virtual learning options for the 2021-2022 school year.  This will look similar to how this year looked with Quest teachers teaching our students.  All students must meet the KCS requirements before they will be allowed to enroll in the virtual learning program. The window to register your child for virtual learning will be April 15-23.  More information to come.

4. Yearbooks – Our 2020-2021 Sterchi Elementary yearbook will go on sale next Thursday, April 1.  The cost will be $25 and these will be delivered before the end of this school year.  A link to purchase will be provided next week on our school website and via the weekly newsletter. All purchases must be made online and will be on sale until April 24.

5. Kindergarten Round-Up – April 13 – Please tell your friends, family, and neighbors who have rising kindergarteners about kindergarten round-up.  Registration packets will be available from the office beginning March 29.

We are excited to embark on this final home stretch of our school year.  It is a busy time, full of learning, but also a fun time with many more memories to be made.  Thank you for your strong and unwavering support for our students, teachers, staff, and school.  We really are “better together!”

Week of March 8-12, 2021

Good evening!

I hope that you have enjoyed the beautiful sunshine this weekend!

As I think about the week ahead and the approach of Spring Break, I also think back to where we were one year ago this week.  We were anticipating Spring Break and had no idea of what was to come!  Over the past year, our students, families, teachers, and staff have hung in there day after day, rolled with whatever was thrown our way, and PERSEVERED!

When will things go back "to normal?" We have no idea. However, I do know that our incredible Sterchi students, teachers, and staff will continue to work hard and do the best that we can each and every day.  We are better together and we appreciate all the many ways that our families and community support and encourage us!

I hope that each of you has a blessed week and a wonderful, restful Spring Break!

December 13, 2020

Good afternoon Sterchi families!  I hope that you have enjoyed this weekend.

As you know, all KCS schools will be "RED" this week, meaning that students will be learning virtually from home.  Teachers have communicated their schedules for each day this week, sent home needed materials, and will be ready to connect with their students and support them throughout this week.

Please see this link to the newsletter that was sent home Friday, Guide to Going RED at Sterchi - https://www.smore.com/myv9j  It has information about school hours, information about meals for students next week and many helpful links if your student needs assistance.

Please also see the link to this week's school news - Sterchi News - December 14-18 - https://www.smore.com/y9chk

Our students and their teachers are more than prepared to teach and learn virtually this week.  The key to a successful week will be flexibility, patience, and grace - for everyone.  Reach out if you have questions or need support.  Be patient with things beyond anyone's control (internet issues, connectivity, etc.)

I'll also be reading aloud to the students each day.  Their teachers will share those links.

Please stay safe and healthy.  We look forward to seeing everyone when students return on January 5.

Good evening!  I hope that everyone has had a great weekend!

We've just completed our third week of school and we welcomed all of our kindergarten students this week.  We are so proud of our students and excited to just have everyone back in school.  Let's do everything we can to stay in school by washing our hands often, wearing our masks, and social distancing as much as possible.

Please see this link for this week's school news:  https://www.smore.com/7gmhc

Our Sterchi Together-ism for September is RESPECT.  “Treat people the way you want to be treated.  Talk to people the way you want to be talked to.”

THANK YOU for all that you are doing to support your child, our school, and your child’s teacher.  We are BETTER TOGETHER!

September 7, 2020

Good afternoon Sterchi families!  I hope that everyone has had a nice weekend.  Isn’t this weather beautiful!

We just completed our second week of school and everything is rolling right along.  Beginning this past Friday, our 1st – 5th graders will be bringing their Chromebooks home each night.  Kindergarteners will be doing this beginning next Friday, September 11.  A letter was sent home with students on Friday about the Chromebooks, and there are some important things to emphasize:

  • Please do not have food or drink nearby or while using the Chromebook.
  • The Chromebook chargers should stay at home and the devices should be charged each evening.
  • Chromebooks should be returned to school each morning fully charged so that they can be incorporated into daily classroom instruction.
  • Students need to carry their Chromebooks back and forth in a sturdy backpack, not in their hands/arms.  If you are able to purchase an inexpensive protective sleeve for the Chromebook, that would be even better but is not required.
  • Please talk to your children frequently about taking care of the Chromebook.
  • If there are any problems with your child’s device, please contact your child’s teacher.

Tomorrow is the first full day of kindergarten for all of our newest Sterchi Royals.  There will probably be more traffic at arrival and dismissal, so please plan accordingly.

Also, tomorrow begins the first day that all of our students may eat breakfast and lunch for free.  This will continue until at least December.  If students want to eat breakfast at school, they need to arrive at school before 7:30am.  Our school doors open at 7:10am each morning and classes start promptly at 7:45am.

Order forms came home on Friday for class t-shirts.  The order forms and payment are due September 18. When deciding on a t-shirt size for your child, please give them room to grow this year.  For our virtual students, your teachers will share the form with you and how best to return those to school with your payment.

School fees can be paid online, by check, or with cash.  Please pay these fees as soon as possible.

Don’t forget to join the Sterchi PTA and volunteer!  Our wonderful PTA does so many things throughout the year to support our students, families, and staff.

Please see the attached “Are you connected?” document to make sure you are receiving all the important information from KCS, from the school, and from your child’s teachers.  ARE YOU CONNECTED?

Our Sterchi Together-ism for September is RESPECT.  “Treat people the way you want to be treated.  Talk to people the way you want to be talked to.”

THANK YOU for all that you are doing to support your child, our school, and your child’s teacher.  We are BETTER TOGETHER!

Virtual learning Students and Parents- August 30, 2020
Virtual learning - August 30, 2020

Good afternoon!  I hope that each of you has had a very nice weekend!

You should have already received an email and/or phone message from me that went out to all of our Sterchi families.  I send these each Sunday afternoon/evening to reflect on the week that we just completed and to look forward to the week ahead.  There may or may not be things that are applicable to your virtual student, simply because they are not in the school building.  I do want to communicate with you each week, regardless, because I want your student and your family to continue to be an active and engaged part of our school community.

Thank you for your support, patience, and perseverance during this first week of virtual learning.  Navigating the technology is new to everyone and there will be challenges.  I can assure you that our teachers are working incredibly hard to make this the best learning experience possible for their students.  Please continue to be patient and support your child and his/her teachers.

Breakfast and lunch meals are available for virtual students on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am to 10am at our Cedar Heights entrance.  You must pre-register online and that information was in the white school folder.

Important reminders for parents & students:

-  Please pay your student's school fees as soon as possible.  You can pay these online, mail to school, or drop off to the office between 8am and 2pm, M-F.

-  Please make sure that your student is logging on to his/her class each morning on time, and that he/she returns to class at the designated times throughout the day.  We are taking attendance - absences, tardies, and early dismissals.

-  If your child is having technology difficulties at any point during the day, please email or message the teacher directly.

-  Review the expectations for appropriate language, communication, and the dress code.  Be aware of what others can see and hear in the background when your child is online with his/her teachers and classmates.

-  Please be available to assist your child when needed and check-in to monitor his/her participation during instruction.  As we've said many times, there will be challenges and bumps in the road with the technology and online learning.  Every child is different and needs different levels of support and supervision.

We're excited to get this school year started and we want each child to have the best learning experience possible.  Please reach out to your child's teachers or me if you have any questions.  Let us know if there is anything that we can do to support your child or you.

We ARE better together!

August 23, 2020

Good afternoon Sterchi families!  The day we have all been waiting for is almost here – the 1st day of school is TOMORROW! It has been 5 ½ months since we were all last together on March 12, and we are so excited to welcome everyone back to school – in person or virtually.

There are some important things to know about the first day of school:

  • School starts at 7:45am. It is a ½ day of school, with dismissal at 11:15am.
  • Kindergarten students do not attend school until their first staggered day.
  • Because of social distancing and COVID guidelines, parents and visitors will not be able to walk students into the building.  All of our teachers and staff will be on hand to greet students and help them find their classrooms.
  • Please stay in your car in the line when dropping students off.  Do not park and walk students up to the building.
  • Bus riders’ temperatures will be taken when they arrive at school.
  • Students should have backpacks ready, say their “goodbyes,” and be ready to hop out of the car when it is their turn.  Car riders’ temperatures will be taken as they exit the car, before parents drive away.
  • Breakfast will be served tomorrow, but lunch is not served on ½ days.
  • Please return the completed beginning of year paperwork, Chromebook, and charger to school with your child tomorrow.
  • Chromebooks should travel safely back to school in a backpack, not be carried in students’ arms.
  • Wear a mask.

Tuesday, August 25, will be a full day of school, 7:45am to 2:45pm.  Breakfast and lunch will be served.

Each grade level’s parent meeting will be held virtually for all parents online – whether your child is attending school in-person or virtually.  Your child’s teacher will send more information about the link for this meeting.  Important Back-to-School Dates

We are so ready to get the 2020-2021 school year started!  We are BETTER TOGETHER and we can’t wait to see you tomorrow!

Good afternoon Sterchi families!

Our teachers and staff have been working hard to prepare for our students to return to school.  We are anxious to see everyone's smiling faces (wearing a mask) again soon!  Please see the two attached flyers.  One is our school's reopening plan, which was previously shared with all families in July.  The other flyer is the information for distributing Chromebooks to our students who will be attending school in-person this year.

Chromebook deployment for in-person students

Sterchi re-opening plan

The reason that we are distributing Chromebooks to our in-person learners before the first day of school is to give all families the opportunity to make sure that they can connect the devices to their home internet.  Students will need to bring their devices and chargers back to school on the first day, Monday, August 24, so that they can be used in the classroom.

Please note these other important dates:

Wednesday, August 19 - Students/families may view their child's homeroom teacher in the Aspen Family Portal

Wednesday, August 19 - Chromebook deployment for in-person learners  Chromebook deployment for in-person learners

Monday, August 24 - 1st day of school, 1/2 day dismissal at 11:15am

Tuesday, August 25 - Friday, September 4 - Kindergarten staggered days

Monday, September 7 - Labor Day holiday - No School

Tuesday, September 8 - 1st full day of kindergarten, 7:45am-2:45pm

I also wanted to let you know that our yearbooks for the 2019-2020 school year have not arrived yet.  Production was delayed due to COVID and they are working hard to catch up on all of their orders.  We will let everyone know as soon as the yearbooks arrive.

We are looking forward to the school year ahead.  Remember, we ARE better together!
