Principal's Update - High School

NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER

DEAR PARENTS AND STUDENTS,

Thank you, again, for a great start to the school year and a successful parent/teacher conference night. We are over half way through the fall semester so please encourage your students to stay focused and finish strong. We have 35% of students on the honor roll and are proud of them.

 

Our school website will be in operation soon, and we will link the parent newsletters there as well.

 

We have several important announcements for parents and students:

MONDAY NOVEMBER 15TH

PICTURE DAY, GRADUATION INFORMATION, CLUBS, & GAMES

Monday, November 15th

8:30 - 11:30 at Sarah Simpson Professional Development Center

 

We will have Senior class photos and underclassman photos in the Great Room at Sarah Simpson Professional Development Center. 801 Tipton Avenue, Knox TN 37920

 

Clubs will be present for students to sign-up along with games and KCS Virtual High School shirts for purchase. All clubs will meet virtually on Asynchronous Thursdays.

Fall Test Dates
 

FALL TEST DATES

November 30th - English 1

December 1st - Algebra 1

December 2nd - Algebra 2

December 7th - US History

December 9th - Geometry

December 14th - Biology

 

These are state tested courses, and the tests will be given in person at Sarah Simpson Professional Development Center. 801 Tipton Avenue, Knox TN 37920.

Students will need to bring their chromebook and charger. Each test will begin at 8:30 am.

 

Students will only need to take the above assessments if they are currently enrolled in the course for the fall semester. These assessments are state requirements and will count as 15% of a students grade.

Jostens will be present at Sarah Simpson for picture day on November 15th for gaps, gowns, invitations, and all things for seniors.

 

 

Early Graduates:

Early graduate students received an email from Ms. Longmire with a form to be completed. They will need to send the completed form back her at their earliest convenience. Ms. Longmire will send a senior check out form to our early graduates in mid November.

If your family would like to purchase items for families in need, please use this link. You will be directed to an Amazon Wish list. Once the items are purchased, they will be shipped to our location at the Virtual Secondary Schools, and we get the items to the families in need. The list will be updated as families in need complete the form linked above. The donors and recipients will remain anonymous.

 

SCHOOL FEES

Parents,

The link below will give you access to the schools fees account. School fees are used to purchase software to increase student engagement in the classroom. Our teachers use programs such as Jamboard, Kami, Kahoot!, Quizziz, etc. to measure student learning and provide feedback. The school fees help us to provide different platforms for engaging students in a virtual setting.

 

Senior Fees will pay for the diploma and diploma cover.

DRIVER'S LICENSE

Students must have an SF1010 form to apply for a learner's permit or driver's license. The SF1010 form verifies the student is in good academic standing and is not truant. Please complete this form to request an SF1010 form, and we will respond back via email.

 

To be in good standing, students will need to be passing their courses and have fewer than 10 unexcused absences.

 

BELL SCHEDULE

Not sure when your student should be in class? Students should be joining their teachers everyday except Thursday. On Thursday, students work independently (asynchronously) on their assignment.

 

1st period - 8:30 - 10:00

2nd period - 10:10 - 11:40

3rd period - 12:20 - 1:50

4th period - 2:00 - 3:30

 

ATTENDANCE

If students miss more than 20 minutes of class, they will be marked absent. To submit notes to excuse the absences, please email them to virtualhs@knoxschools.org. Each student is allowed 10 parent notes and unlimited doctor's notes.

 

We are beginning to schedule Progressive Truancy Plans for students and parents and we need to get those absences excused. To see which dates your students was marked absent, please look in Aspen under your students attendance tab.

 

PARENTS AS OBSERVERS IN CANVAS

Becoming a parent observer in Canvas is a great way to be able to monitor your student's work submissions as well as see your child's growth. We also have a canvas page just for high school which houses all announcements and information. Please use the link below for directions.
