Please remember that Thursday is a half-day for students and dismissal is at 11:15!    Students will report to school on Monday, January 9 after the winter break.  Thank you!

As you know, my time as principal of the BEST school in Knox County is coming to an end.  As I leave you, I want to thank you for your support of our school, our students, and our staff.  I am so incredibly proud of our school family and the wonderful work our partnership has accomplished.  We have a wonderful staff and an awesome, hard-working PTA who work with all of you to provide the very best education for our children.  I have been blessed beyond measure to be a part of this community and a member of this school family.  Thank you for the honor of working with you for your children!

Shay Siler will begin her work as principal in January and will work with our administrative team, Kim Harrison and Cyndee Casselman.  Your children and our school family will be in excellent hands!  I appreciate your continued support of Karns Elementary.

    Thank you!

Thank you so much for your support of the disaster relief efforts through the American Red Cross!  Our Hat Day raised $1,579.31!  We had a couple of parents who planned to send in a donation.  As soon as we are certain we have all the donations, we will take the check to the American Red Cross.

Please remember that next Thursday, Dec. 22 is a HALF DAY for students.  Dismissal is at 11:15 a.m.   Winter break begins and students will not return to school until January 9.

    Regarding our Safety Patrol students:

When the weather is extremely frigid the safety patrols will be outside in shifts.  We will spread them out between two car positions, but please have your child exit the car when your car is in position to be able to do so.  If there is not a safety there to open the door, your child still needs to exit the car so we can keep the traffic moving at the same pace we normally do.  If the weather is storming, the safety patrols will not be on duty but an adult will be present to monitor the students as they exit the cars.

Next week our new safety patrols will be in training.  While they have served previously, the traffic pattern has changed since they were in service.  These are things that the parents bringing the safety patrols and picking them up in the afternoon need to know and other parents who arrive early need to know:

*Safety patrols should arrive between 7:00 and 7:10 a.m.  The building opens at 7:10 and safety patrols should be ready for duty.

*All car traffic needs to enter the campus from the west side.  Do not enter from the bus entrance.  Safety patrol students should be dropped off in front of the west side of the building or in front of the gym.  They may not be dropped off in the circle where the buses are arriving.  If cars are already parked in the loops waiting on the building to open, safety parents may drive around to the beginning of the line so students can exit and be at their post on time.

*In the afternoon, safety patrols should be picked up at 3:00.  Parents may park in the west parking lot or along the inner circle of the loop in front of the gym.  We ask that you not arrive before 3:00 if you are parking in the inner circle in front of the gym.  You should not park or wait in the area in front of the east office as buses will be returning.

Please ask if you have any questions.

    Thank you!

Thank you for your support of our PTA Fall Fundraiser.  We should be getting a final report soon of how much money was raised for our school through our PTA with the Boosterthon Fun Run.  Please turn in any donations that you collected as soon as possible!  Thank you!

The third grade music program will now be on Tuesday, December 20 at 6:30 p.m.   The first grade music program is on Thursday, December 15 at 6:00 p.m.

On Friday, December 9, you have the opportunity to support the disaster relief effort for the Gatlinburg/Sevier County area.  We will have a HAT DAY and all donations raised will be donated to the American Red Cross.  Students may donate $1 or more and wear a holiday hat or a favorite hat!  Thank you for helping our school family give to others.

Please remember that if it is storming or extremely frigid, cold weather, our safety patrol children will not be outside to open car doors.  Please have your child exit the car as they typically would even if safety patrols are not on duty or if we have fewer on duty than we normally do.  There will be an adult on duty to monitor the children.  Thank you!

We have attached information for parents regarding helping your child build deep math skills.  Thank you for reading it!

Our new traffic pattern for our campus must be followed at all times, not just when school is open.  The traffic pattern is ONE -WAY from the point of entry on the west side and around the back of the Annex building.  If you go the wrong way behind the Annex, you are likely going to have a head-on collision.  We must follow the traffic pattern at all times.  Also, the double lanes of traffic begins at the point that you turn onto our campus, NOT in front of the houses leading to the campus.   Traffic is two-way in front of those houses and you must stay in the right lane until you reach the campus.   Only buses and daycare vans can enter the campus from the east side of the campus.  There is no student drop off in front of the east office.  Parking must be in the parking lot at all times, not in the lane in front of the office.  We have to keep this area open for bus traffic and bus parking.  Thank you for your help and compliance!  We appreciate you helping to keep our students and staff safe.

As always, we appreciate your partnership with our school!

    November 22, 2016

Happy Thanksgiving!  We appreciate you and your partnership with our school.  Thank you for all of your support!  Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday!  Remember school will be closed Wednesday through Friday (November 23-25).

    A few reminders:

Boosterthon Fun Run Pledges are due on Tuesday, November 22.

PLEASE do not go the wrong way behind the Annex building at any time.  The people who follow our traffic pattern know that the road is ONE-WAY from the west around the back of the building.  We have had several instances of people almost being hit head-on by cars who are traveling the WRONG way.  All traffic must enter from the west and EXIT out the east side at ALL times.  This is not only for the hours that school is in session.  PLEASE help us keep everyone safe.  Thank you!

    Looking ahead to next week

PTA General Meeting is Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.  This informative session is a joint presentation by our PTA and the Knox County Sheriff’s Department on Anti-Bullying.  Child care for school age children is available.

Santa pictures are Wednesday through Friday.  Information was sent home on Friday.

Our KES PTA is having a Chipotle Spirit Night on December 1 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Please see the flyer for details on how our school will earn 50% of sales!  Thank you!

    November 19, 2016

The Boosterthon Fun Run on Friday was exciting, loud, and lots of fun for our students!  Thank you so much for your support of our PTA Fall Fundraiser!  We are still a little short of our overall goal so the pledge board on line is still open through Monday.  Thank you for your participation!  Donations are due on Tuesday, November 22.  Our PTA will be sending home reminders on Monday.  Here are the pledge leaders at this point:

    Top classes:

We are attaching the information about our PTA General Meeting on Tuesday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m.  Our PTA is partnering with the Knox County Sheriff’s Department for a presentation and question/answer session on bullying awareness and prevention.  Child care will be available for school age children provide by our after school program, SHADES of Development.

     PTA General Meeting Anti-Bullying Program

Please remember that next week school will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.  As we move into this season of Thanksgiving, please know how much we appreciate our families and your support of our students, our staff, and our school.  We appreciate your partnership with us.  Your support this past week for “Thank A Teacher” week was exceptional.  Thank you for all the ways you showed our staff your appreciation for the work they do with your children.

    November 17, 2016

    Some things to remember:

*we will be running inside the gym due to the questionable air quality at this time

    12:15:  Kindergarten

    1:15:  First Grade

This will be in place of everyone’s regular encore rotation so this will be DAY 0!  Monday will be DAY 3 of the Encore Rotation.

Here is an update of the Pledge Board and the high flying classes:

    Kindergarten: Fletcher, $31ppl

    1st grade: Buck, $36ppl

    2nd grade: Bowles, $31

    4th grade: Henry, $37ppl

    5th grade: Kuneman, $27ppl

As always, thank you for your support!

Friday is the final day to bring donations for our food drive to fill the Thanksgiving baskets for our needy families!  Thank you for donating the items!  The baskets will be given to deserving families in OUR community.  Thank you to Beaver Ridge Methodist Church for partnering with us to help families!

Another quick reminder about our traffic pattern….please let the cars who are exiting the Annex parking lot (who signed in their children in our Prek/Preschool classes) merge over into the LEFT lane when they merge into the traffic flow.  They do not need to go into the drop off points and need to be able to turn left to exit the campus.  Our staff members are also turning left to park in the area in front of the east office.  If you are exiting the campus from the west side, please take turns letting the people turn.  We appreciate your cooperation with each other and being good role models for children!  Thank you so much for your help!

You will see below important information regarding our PTA Fall Fundraiser, the Boosterthon Fun Run program.  Please read and consider how you can support our school and our students through our PTA.  Our PTA’s budget provides for technology programming, playground improvements, instructional materials for classrooms, Eager Beaver Tech Lab, and this year we would also like to purchase new stage curtains.   Thank you for your support!

    Parents,

The Karns Elementary Fun Run kicked off today with an exciting Pep Rally, and we are thrilled about this year’s program! We’ve asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run program (which will last about two weeks), making our fundraising simpler, more profitable, and more fun. Our Fun Run includes all students in a fun, team-building, fitness event while helping our school raise much-needed funds.

This year, our entire school is raising funds for new stage curtains! Our goal is to raise $25,000 and we need YOUR help!

Here’s how you can support Karns Elementary:

    • Register your student on funrun.com. To log in pledges, please register your child on funrun.com, using our school’s registration code: 953214 Students receive a FREE GIFT just by having their parent or guardian register them on funrun.com.
    • Reach out to sponsors. Connect with 10 sponsors. You can use social media in the pledging process and even create custom videos—all of this is on funrun.com. Be sure to capture and record each sponsor’s e-mail address. They will also have an easy opportunity to pay for your student’s pledge by credit card online.
    • Ask your child about the BACKYARD BOX OFFICE Character Act of the day! This year’s character theme is Backyard Box Office, a movie theme about making a difference by getting into character. Watch the fun videos with your child on funrun.com.
    • Come to the Fun Run on Friday November 18! All students are invited to participate, regardless of financial participation. Remember, students will be running 30-35 laps, and we would love for you to come out and cheer.

Thank you for supporting our school. We hope to see you next week at the Fun Run!

    Sincerely,

    Abigail Krause

Please support our community project through our annual Thanksgiving food drive.  We will collect needed items from November 7 to 18.  We partner with our one of our Partners in Ed, Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church, to supply Thanksgiving baskets to needy families in OUR community.  The church will supply a turkey and other perishable items.  Would you consider donating some needed items?   These are suggested items to donate:

canned cranberry sauce, canned fruit, green beans, corn, yams, 8 oz. instant potatoes, 6 oz. box stuffing, 6 oz. box jello, macaroni & cheese, 1 oz. packet gravy mix, 10 oz. bag mini-marshmallows, 5 oz. can evaporated milk, 5 oz. can sweetened condensed milk, box dessert brownies, cookies, etc.

Our Backyard Book Fair begins on Monday, November 7 and goes through November 17.  The family night with extended hours will be Thursday, November 10 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.  This is the night of our Veteran’s Day Program performed by our KES Chorus at 6:30 p.m.  All are welcome to attend and we especially invite our Veterans to join us!

Our PTA Fall Fundraiser will kick-off on November 9 with our Boosterthon Fun Run on Friday, November 18!  Watch for details to come home next week.  This is a fun, exciting event for everyone!

Remember that Tuesday, November 8, is an inservice day for teachers and a school holiday for students…NO SCHOOL!

Don’t forget our Family Math Night is Thursday, November 17 with dinner, while supplies last, at 5:30 and math games and activities beginning at 6:00 p.m.

     Traffic Pattern Reminders:

*For morning arrival, students may be dropped off through EITHER lane…in front of the west office or in front of the gym.  The students should enter the front door closest to where they exit their cars.  They can then walk through the building to the correct bus hall or wing.  You will need to be in the correct lane for pick up in the afternoon.  The grade level distinction is primarily for the afternoon pick-up because your children will be in the designated place (either gym for grades 2-5 or the west lobby for grades K &1).

If you are coming in the afternoon to pick up for chorus, Bricks for Kids, Eager Beaver Tech Lab, etc. please use the pick- up area for 2nd-5th grades.  We must keep the area in front of the east office open in case of a bus coming back on campus.

You may NOT enter the campus from the east side if you are in a personally owned vehicle.  ONLY school buses, school shuttles, and daycare vans/buses may enter from the east.  The only exception to this is for emergency pick up from 1:45 to 2:15.  The reason we have this in place is we were not sure what time the traffic would be so backed up that you would be able to move around the Annex to get to the parking lot for pick up.  After 2:15, you may not enter from the east due to the bus traffic.

REMEMBER we have a 10 mph speed limit… PLEASE….children are crossing at various times of the day between the two buildings and we need everyone to slow down and obey our speed limit.

Please do not move our sawhorses!  This is a safety issue!  Our gates and signs for marking off the bus round should be here soon.

YOU may not park in front of the east office or anywhere in the fire lane or the area that was parking in our former pattern.  This has to be reserved for our buses at all time.  Buses come in and out for various reasons during the day.  You must be in a parking space in the parking lot.  Thank you!Have a wonderful weekend!

    ~Darlene Miller, principal

    November 2, 2016

Good Evening to our Karns Elementary Parents,

This is Darlene Miller with an important message regarding our school.  As we consider my replacement as principal at Karns Elementary, our school system’s leaders recognize the importance of hearing from our parents and Karns community regarding the qualities necessary for the next principal for your school.  Ms. Julie Thompson, Executive Director of Elementary Education, will be conducting a community meeting on Monday, November 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the east library.   Typically these meetings last approximately 30 minutes but may go longer if needed to hear your thoughts.  She will then take your input and thoughts and share those with Mr. Buzz Thomas, our interim superintendent.  Please know that your input is important and will be considered in the decision.  Please let us know if you have questions regarding this important meeting.  Thank you!

    October 26, 2016

We hope to see you on Thursday evening for our SPOOKY SCIENCE NIGHT!  Food purchases begin at 5:30 and will last until the supplies are gone.  See you on Thursday!

    Traffic Pattern REMINDERS…

We are still waiting on some of our signage and gates to help clarify the new pattern.  In the meantime please follow these reminders.  All procedures are for the safety of the students and adults on our campus.

When parking, you MUST be in a parking space that is within either parking lot or parking in the overflow parking area by the kindergarten playground.  You may NOT park in the bus round in front of the east office.  There used to be parking along the side with our former traffic pattern, but this area must be clear at all times for buses that arrive.  We have field trips at various times that require buses to come and go through the day.  If you come for lunch, to park to chaperone a field trip, to pick up a sick student, to attend a meeting, etc., PLEASE park in a parking space in the parking lot, NOT the bus round.

REMEMBER we have a 10 mph speed limit… PLEASE….children are crossing at various times of the day between the two buildings and we need everyone to slow down and obey our speed limit.

You may not start lining up on our campus for dismissal until after 1:45.  For several days, we have had cars lining up earlier than that.  The physical education teachers are already giving up using their instructional area for the last period of the day (fourth grade).  Please do not come onto the campus to park for dismissal until 1:45 or preferably later.

We have advised everyone to turn left going out of the campus if you do not have to turn right onto Oak Ridge Highway.  If traffic is backed up and you cannot turn right out of the campus, you must turn left in order to keep the traffic flow moving off campus.

DO NOT MOVE the saw horses, please!   They are there for the purpose of keeping the traffic flow correct.  It is a huge SAFETY hazard when saw horses are moved and people intentionally drive the wrong way onto or exiting the campus.  Do you want to be responsible for a car or a child hit because you moved the saw horse and created a safety hazard?  PLEASE follow our traffic pattern at all times.  This is NOT just for morning arrival and afternoon dismissal, but is the procedure for all times of the day and night.

Our parents who are picking up safety patrol students in the afternoon have been instructed to pull into the dismissal area for our 2nd-5th grades and park on the edge near the flagpole.  This is to keep them out of the bus round.  We have two buses that come in the afternoon to drop off bus aides and sometimes buses come back with children.  We must keep the bus round (area in front of east office) clear.

If you are coming in the afternoon to pick up for chorus, Bricks for kids, Eager Beaver Tech Lab, etc. please use the pick-up area for 2nd-5th grades.  We must keep the area in front of the east office open in case of a bus coming back on campus.

    PTA NEWS:

Have you ordered Karns Spirit Wear?  All order must be received by NOVEMBER 2 (one week from today!).

Our next PTA Spirit Night will be on Thursday, Nov. 3 at Blaze Pizza in Turkey Creek!  From 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. 20% of proceeds will be donated back to the school if you have the attached flier.  You can also show it to them on your phone.  You must present flier or show it before paying.

We appreciate your continued effort to support our school in so many ways and to keep everyone safe.  Thank you!

    October 18, 2016

Thank you for your cooperation with our new traffic pattern.  Please remember that the new pattern is in effect all day, not just during arrival and dismissal.  We had an issue with two buses overcrowded today which delayed our buses leaving for a few minutes.  Otherwise the afternoon dismissal went smoothly.   Please remember that the NEW BUS ROUND is now in front of the east office.  Since we have field trips at various times that require buses to be coming in and out of campus, you cannot park along the side in front of the east office.  You must be in the parking lot and parked in a space when coming into the east office.  We are still waiting on the finishing pieces (painting over the lines for parking spaces and signage).  Thank you for your cooperation.  The morning was much smoother today and we will continue to monitor the traffic pattern for adjustments.  When parking in the Annex parking lot, please do not block the space for the bus to park.  Thank you!

I am attaching a flier about our PTA Members Meet and Greet that will be this Friday.  Please see the flier for details even if you are not a PTA member at this time!  This should be a fun event for all.

Don’t forget our Spooky Science Night is next Thursday!!!  We hope you plan on attending this annual fun event.

Thank you for your support and cooperation!

    ~Darlene Miller

    October 17, 2016

I apologize for the many emails in the past few days, and I am certain we will need to send more this week as we clarify and refine the new traffic pattern.  I appreciate your patience this morning with the traffic.  Hopefully this morning is very much like the first week of school traffic, and we hope each day will get smoother and faster.  The Knox County Traffic Engineering Department, who developed this plan, will be observing this week and determining if we need to make adjustments.  For several days, we will have staff members who are at key intersecting points helping to train on the traffic pattern.  When they are no longer in place, it will be critical that everyone take turns in exiting the circles into the driveway traffic flow.

Here are some important points to remember:

*The traffic is to be in a single lane coming down the road to enter the campus.  The TWO LANES begin when you turn left on the campus and go around the back of the Annex.  Please do not double in two lanes on the road.  Our neighbors cannot get out of their driveways if we are totally blocking the road.

*For morning arrival, students may be dropped off in either circle and the students should enter the front door closest to where they exit their cars.

*Please remember that cars exiting the parking lot from the Annex will need to move over to the left lane, if possible, so they can exit the campus instead of going around the loop.  Allowing them to get in front of you to exit will not make your wait longer, but will actually shorten it because they do not need to go through the traffic circle.  Thank you for being accommodating.

*It is recommended that you turn left when leaving the campus and go to the traffic light at Ingles to get out onto Oak Ridge Highway.

*The area in front of the east office is NOW the bus round and where daycare vans will also drop off and pick up.  You MUST be in a parking space if you come are coming into the east office for any reason.  You cannot park in the drive or in the fire lane.

    Thank you!

SHADES of Development Parents Parking Instructions

Beginning, Monday, October 17, if you are picking up your child from SHADES of Development (located in our ANNEX Building B, you will need to either park in the parking lot located at the back of the ANNEX building or in the spaces located in front of ANNEX Building A (closest to the Annex Gym).   If these spaces are full, you can come on to the parking lot in front of our west side of the main building and park in the parking lot.  Due to events after school and traffic on our campus at various times, you cannot park in front of Building B as you have in the past.  This is now the drive and throughway for all campus traffic.   Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.

    October 15, 2016

Our school family mourns the loss of one of our fourth grade students.  Details of this tragedy have been on the news, and we know some students may need support as we go back to school.  We will have additional counselors at school on Monday morning to assist with any students who need support.  Our school counselors, Brittany Pattillo and Heather Rouse, will be available as we move forward as well.

PLEASE REMEMBER….Our new traffic pattern for our campus will BEGIN on MONDAY, October 17!  All POV (personal owned vehicles) will enter the campus from the west side (by Hardees and Walgreens red light) and exit through the east.  Please allow extra time.  We will adjust tardy times for the first week or so as everyone learns the new pattern.

A couple of items to remember…do not block the entrance/exit to the parking lot by the kindergarten playground off of the west circle.  This is where we have instructed overflow parking to go and people who come to our campus for training events are instructed to park there.  Those vehicles need to be able to exit the parking lot when needed.

Also, behind the Annex buildings, the cars exiting that parking lot will need to pull out and move over to the left lane to exit the campus.  These parents have children in the Preschool/PreK programs and need to park and sign their children in and out.  Please be accommodating to those cars that are exiting the campus as they do not need to be in the loop going in front of the main buildings.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation! Thank you!

Please remember this is the last week to participate with our community in supporting the Second Harvest Challenge for Karns High School.  Help us fill our four barrels located in the main building lobbies!  All donations should be in by the morning of October 21st.  Here are the needed items to donate:

They will accept non-perishable canned or boxed goods...most in demand are: peanut butter, canned fruits & vegetables, canned tuna, and cereal.   PLEASE:  No glass containers, no perishables, no soft drinks, no flour, rice, or sugar.

     Thank you!

Update on our driveway construction and road pattern:

We are getting close to beginning our new traffic pattern.  This weekend the contractors striped the driveway and traffic pattern areas to help guide us on our new traffic pattern.  We are still waiting on the installation of signs, gates and a few other things to complete the work.  As soon as we have our projected start date for the new traffic pattern, we will send out our traffic pattern map and Question/Answer Fact Sheet.  We wanted to let you know that even though the stripes and arrows are down, we haven’t started the new pattern yet.   The parking lot in the back of the Annex is ready to be used for parents to drop off their children in the Annex, but there is still construction to finish.  The road behind the Annex is one –way with traffic moving from the west side of the campus to the east.  Thank you!

    September 15, 2016

THANK YOU so much for your support of our school coupon book sale!  As of Wednesday after one week of selling, we have sold 1,631 books.  Thank you!  Remember our goal is 4,700 books!

As a reminder, we are filling our book orders every day and distributing our prizes earned on Fridays and the last day of the sale.  We already have our video Game Truck prize set for Monday, October 17.  All students who sell 15 or more books will be able to participate in the Game Truck.  Also, the top selling class will participate in the fun!

Our first MONEY GRAB will be on Monday.  All students who sell and bring in money for 2 or more coupon books on Friday, September 16 will have their name put in a drawing.  Two students will be selected to participate in the money grab!

If you have any questions about our prizes or what we need these funds for, please review the letter that went home last week.  Thank you!

We are closer to our new traffic pattern…stay tuned!  Reminder:  PLEASE DO NOT pull up in front of the Annex and let your K-5 students walk up the sidewalk to the west side of the building.  This area is ONLY for students in the preschool and preK programs.  If your child is in K-5, YOU MUST pull into one of the circle areas to drop off your child with a safety patrol opening the door.  This is the safest route for your child to get to their classroom.  We continue to have issues with people not following this protocol.  Thank you for your cooperation

    September 9, 2016

We had a tremendous start to our School Coupon Book sale!  THANK YOU!  We have attached the letter outlining how the funds are used and some of the school prizes in addition to the KCS prize list.   Thank you for your support of our school and your children.  Our first “Spin the Prize Wheel” winners will be announced on Monday morning!  Ten students every day will be drawn from the daily list of students who sell books and will get to spin the prize wheel to select a prize.  Every book sold is a ticket in the drawing for the student.

Please mark your calendar for our first family engagement activity, Kicking Off Curriculum.  The event will be held on Thursday, September 29 from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.  Childcare for K-5 students will be provided.  This will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about your child’s curriculum.  Thank you!

Our new traffic pattern info will be coming out soon.  Please watch for the start date (not yet determined).  PLEASE remember to come into the circles in front of the building to drop off your children if they are in K-5.   This is the SAFEST way to get your child in the building.  We have safety patrol students all through the building to assist students who are walking from the one end of the building to the other.  Only parents of students in our prek and preschool classes should be parking in front of the annex.  Do not park there if your child is in K-5.  Also, we have several areas in front of the annex marked for our handicap access and the bus who transport students in those classes.  PLEASE do not park in the area for handicap unless you have a handicap parking permit.  Thank you!

As always, more information regarding various school events and activities can be found on our schetpool website, https://www.knoxschools.org/karnses

    School Messenger for Sept. 2:

Thank you for your support with the opening of our new school year!  We especially appreciate your attendance at our Parent Info Nights, the payment of our school fees, and the collaboration with the school and your child’s teacher.

    Announcements:

Monday, Sept. 5 is Labor Day and a holiday.  There will be NO SCHOOL on MONDAY.

If you are interested in information regarding scouting for your child, the Girl Scouts will be having an info session on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6:00 in the east cafeteria.  Boy Scouts will have an info session on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6:30

Our annual school coupon book sale begins on Thursday, Sept. 8.  Please consider how you can support our school with the purchase of our coupon books.  Info regarding prizes and incentives will come home on Thursday.  All books must be paid for before we can send them home.  This is our main fundraiser for the school and supplies our paper, technology, playground upkeep, and instructional supplies.  We appreciate your support!  The books are still only $10 each and truly a value.  Thank you!

The new traffic pattern for our school should be ready to begin sometime in September.  We will keep you informed as soon as we have a definite date, and we will send out a map and Question/Answer info sheet.  In the meantime, we need your help with some traffic and parking concerns:

*Speed limit on campus is 10 mph.  PLEASE watch for children and adults who may be crossing between the Annex building and the main building. Slow down!

*Parking in front of the Annex is ONLY for parents who are dropping off student in the Preschool and Prek classes.  These parents have to sign in their children every morning.  If you are bringing students to the main building, you must go through the circle in front of the east or west offices.  It is actually shorter to go from the east parking lot through the building to the west side as opposed to parking in front of the Annex.  Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5, the students in the preschool and PreK classes can begin being dropped off at 7:15.  Hopefully this will help relieve some of the parking issues around the Annex.   School will still begin at 7:45 a.m.

*Since the start date for the new traffic pattern has been delayed, we need to designate a couple of areas for handicap parking access and our bus arrivals in the Annex area.  Beginning Tuesday, September 6 the areas in front of the ramp going up beside the middle building (Building B) should be reserved for our small buses to unload.  The area on the east side of Building B that has the drive going up to the building will be reserved for handicap parking.  This is temporary until the parking lot behind the building is open again and the handicap parking will be in the parking lot.

PTA board of managers will meet on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.  Come see what our PTA does and join us!

Girls on the Run will have an info session on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the east cafeteria.

    Thank you for your support!

    August 20, 2016

Thank you for an awesome start to our school year!  Just when our traffic pattern is smoothing out with everyone understanding procedures….two challenges will be coming…one starting on Monday and one in September!

Kindergarten and Prek/Preschool students will begin full time on MONDAY, August 22.  Consider that our 10 kindergarten classes and 4 prek/preschool classes have had an average of 65 total students attending each day over the past two weeks.  Starting Monday we will have 250 kindergarten, prek, and preschool students arriving and dismissing.  This will greatly change the traffic!  Plan on arriving earlier than you have in the morning and be patient as the dismissal on the west side of the building will take considerably longer, especially this next week as we train the new kindergarten students how to go out to the car at dismissal.

Kindergarten parents…if you plan on walking your child in on Monday, please be in a parking space.  We do have a parking lot to the west of the building next to the kindergarten playground.  You can park on the east side of the building and walk over to the west.  Either way, make sure you are in a parking space.  We do have safety patrols and staff located throughout the building to assist students to the correct area when you drop your child off in the arrival line.   PreK/preschool parents have to sign their children in and out so they have to park (in a parking space) and come in.

This week will be a challenge as we all learn about the extra traffic and the procedures.  Soon our traffic pattern will change creating another challenge opportunity!  We have been going over the new traffic pattern at our parent info nights and will send home information as well as updates via email when we are closer to the projected start date.

We have been having great attendance at our grade specific parent info nights.  First grade parent info night is Tuesday, August 23 at 6:00 p.m. We will begin in the west cafeteria and then go to the classrooms.

Thank you for your support of our school, our students, and our staff!  Don’t forget to join our PTA and also link your Ingles and Kroger cards to our school to help provide extra funds for our school needs!

I am attaching a link to our KES Parent/Student Handbook.  It was sent out previously, but new students have enrolled and I want to make sure everyone receives it.  You may request a paper copy, if needed.  Thank you!

    ~Darlene Miller, KES Principal

    August 9, 2016

Thank you for a wonderful beginning to a new school year!

Please take time to read through the KES Parent/Student Handbook.  I have a link below that will take you to a printable copy of one that you might save to your computer.  This info is also available on the website.  We appreciate you taking the time to read over our procedures.

    KES Parent/Student Handbook

    Just a few reminders:

If your child participated in the Karns Elementary Summer Reading Program, please return the reading log to school by August 15 (new kindergarten students who participated can bring their log on the first full day for all kindergarten students on Aug. 22).  Thank you!

    Dismissal Reminders:

If you have students in multiple grades, you can pick all of them up from either the west lobby (primarily for Kindergarten and first graders) or the gym (for second through fifth graders).  If your child is being picked up in the space not designated for their grade level, make sure your child’s teacher knows where they need to be for dismissal by sending a written note or email to the teacher.

Students who are getting into and out of vehicles in the morning arrival and afternoon dismissal SHOULD enter and exit the car from the right side of the car.  The safety patrols may not go around to the left side to assist with opening the doors.

Thank you for your support and the great start!  We appreciate your help!

    August 8:

REMINDER……DISMISSAL on Monday, Aug. 8 is at 11:15 a.m.  Second grade students will continue to dismiss from the gym as they have in the past.  Those cars need to come in from the east side to pick up.

Tuesday will be a full day with breakfast and lunch served.  At this time, you may drop off students on either side of the building, and the students can walk through the building to get to the correct side.  Hopefully our traffic will be much smoother tomorrow when parents drop off instead of parking.

Do not move the sawhorses that are in place to keep our traffic pattern in place.  Do not park in front of the sawhorses.  You must be in a parking space starting tomorrow.  Thank you for your cooperation!

Kindergarten staggered enrollment begins tomorrow which means an additional 60 cars each day compared to this morning.  In two weeks all kindergarten students will come every day.

Please be patient with the traffic.  The beginning of school is always challenging, but it will get faster.

Once again, remember our new procedure for students who are “walkers” (either with or without an adult) will not be dismissed until 3:00 (closer to 11:30 on the half day).  Plan your walk accordingly if you are walking to pick up from the outside west gym door.

We will be sending the Parent Student Handbook link later today.  Please make sure you review all of this important information. The same info is on the website and only minor changes have been made regarding our dismissal procedures.  When the construction on the traffic pattern is complete, there will be several changes in procedures.  We will continue to update you as we have information.  PLEASE watch for it.

K-5:  Parent Information Nights will begin in the cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. on the designated day.  All info is on our website.  Thank you!

    August 5:

MEET the TEACHER!  Is Friday, August 05, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.   If you do not know the teacher’s name for you child, please go to the gym first.  We will assist you.  The offices will be finalizing placements and registering new students at that time.

Please remember on Monday morning that traffic will be challenging.  The purpose of Meet the Teacher is to help you feel comfortable letting your child ride the bus or be dropped off in the mornings so you do not have to park your car and walk them in.

We are finalizing the procedures for the new traffic pattern that will begin sometime in September (watch for updated info!).  We will be briefly sharing info at the Parent Information Nights.  This year we will BEGIN our meetings at 6:00 p.m. in the west cafeteria for grades K-2 and the east cafeteria for grades 3-5.  We will dismiss from the cafeteria to the classrooms.  It will be crowded, but please try to attend if possible.  Due to the changes in the traffic pattern, we are making a few changes to our KES Parent Student Handbook.  We will have updated info on our website in the next couple of days and will email the handbook link to you as well.   Thank you for your understanding and support!

In anticipation of our new traffic pattern and potential challenges with parking, we need to make changes to the procedures for students who are walkers (either walking alone or with a parent).  This change will begin on Monday, August 8.  The dismissal for these students will still occur from the gym and parents who are picking up their children to walk with them will continue to go to the OUTSIDE west gym door with your car dismissal tag.  The change is that we will not be dismissing these students until 3:00.  We suggest you adjust your walking time to arrive at our school closer to 3:00.  This decision was made in conjunction with a team responsible for ensuring safety of students during the dismissal process.  The team included school representatives, district office representatives, and our school board representative.  Remember any students who need to be picked up early must be checked out through the office BEFORE 2:15 p.m.

It is going to be a great year!   We are excited and looking forward to it!

    July 27:
Welcome to a new school year at Karns Elementary!  We will be sending more information through email next week, and our website also has information that you may need.  Please check it frequently for updated info.

In anticipation of tax-free weekend, we have attached another copy of the school supply list.  It is also available on our website.

     KES School Supply List

Student schedules will be available on parent portal beginning later in the morning on August 1.  We notified parents in May that we can no longer post class lists on the front doors as we have in the past.  A letter from Julie Thompson, Executive Director of Elementary Education, is available on this email and the website regarding this decision.  Thank you for your understanding of this change to accommodate our students’ privacy.  Student assignments will also be available inside the building for our “Meet the Teacher” event as well as on the first day of school.

Letter from Julie Thompson, Executive Director of Elementary Ed

If you can, please attend our "Meet the Teacher" event next Friday, August 5, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.   Our PTA will be having a BRIEF general PTA meeting at 5:10 p.m. in the west cafeteria in order to pass the PTA budget.  Please join us for this important meeting.

If you have been on our campus recently, you may have noticed work they are completing on the road around the Karns Annex building.  Knox County Engineering Department developed a new traffic pattern plan due to many concerns from the community regarding the traffic back-up on the roads surrounding our school.  The work has been delayed with issues related to utilities and moving utility poles.  It is projected to be completed in September.  We will be sending out further information to you when we are closer to work completion.  Thank you!

If you have not completed the steps on-line for School Messenger “OPT IN”, please do so prior to August 15.  This will allow you to get phone calls on your mobile device if we send out a phone call from the school.  We do not send them very often out of respect for the number of minutes you may have on your phone.  We primarily send emails for communication and this info is also on our school website under “School Messenger Emails for Quick Reference”.

We are excited about the new year!  Enjoy your last few days of summer break before students begin on August 8.  The first day of school is a half day with dismissal at 11:15 a.m.  See you soon!
