Austin-East Magnet High School at 2800 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Knoxville, TN, was founded in 1968 with the merger of Knoxville East and Austin High Schools. In 1997, Austin-East was designated as Knox County’s only Performing Arts Magnet High School, offering continuous quality dance, musical, audio production, advanced art, and theater programs for all residents of Knox County.
In 2008, Austin-East adopted the “school-within-a-school” model of organization with the development of Small Learning Communities. Austin-East is the home to three academic learning communities:
FOCUS, a freshmen academy for ninth-graders;
Discovery, the SLC for students in grades 10-12 who pursue courses in career and technical fields, and
IMPACT, the Performing Arts Magnet Small Learning Community.In 2010, Austin-East became a "TAP (Teacher Advancement Program) School, offering performance-based incentive pay and on-going professional development for teachers at Austin-East, ensuring that students have high-quality, effective teachers in every classroom.Since that time, Austin-East has continued to lead Knox County Schools high school in academic growth data for its students.
