School Times
Preschool
Preschool programs generally aim to create a supportive and stimulating environment for the early childhood education of children between the ages of 3- and 5-years-old through play-based learning, arts and crafts, music, storytelling, and other age-appropriate activities that can contribute to a child's overall growth and readiness for formal education. Knox County Schools offers Blended, Title I, and Voluntary preschool programs.

When it comes to school scheduling, there are a lot of options. Below is a broad introduction into several schedule types used in KCS high schools.
Please visit school websites to learn more about schedules utilized on a specific campus.
Virtual School
Knox County Schools virtual learning options began in 2020. Today, the program has around 500 completely remote students in grades 1-2 who follow the same curriculum as those inside a physical classroom.
Middle and high school students interested in playing sports are encouraged to try out for teams at their zoned / base schools. Interest forms can be found on the Virtual School website.

Half Day: 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Middle School Alternative
The Middle School Alternative Program provides an opportunity for students in grades 6-8 to continue their education during a long-term suspension from their base / zoned school. Each small class is supervised by two adults and academic instruction follows district curriculum and course pacing guides.
Special Day School Program
The Special Day School Program provides services for students from 5- to 22-years-old who are eligible for special education services or may be suspected of having an IDEA identified disability.
Students in this program receive individualized support for the development of behavioral, social, emotional, and academic skills in a highly structured setting with a low student to staff ratio.
Elevate
The Elevate Program is a recovery initiative for high school students struggling with substance misuse, combining intensive outpatient services with academic programming.
A partnership between the McNabb Center, Knox County Schools, and other community organizations, Elevate provides comprehensive wraparound services to support sober living, personalized care, and academic rigor.

Schedule Terminology
View the District Calendar for important dates, including half days and in-service days.
Half Days are designated days when students attend school for only half of the regular school day. Planned in advance and listed on the official academic calendar, these are typically scheduled at the end of grading periods and / or prior to school breaks.
Inclement Weather Days (or Delays) are unplanned school closures or late openings due to severe weather conditions, such as snow, ice, heavy rain, extreme cold, or high winds, that make travel unsafe. These decisions are made to prioritize student and staff safety.
In-service Days are designated days when students do not attend school so teachers and staff can complete professional development and administrative duties. These days are scheduled in advance and listed on the official academic calendar.
Feeder Patterns
A feeder pattern identifies the transitions a student will take between schools as they progress through their education. Most commonly, Knox County Students will move from elementary school to middle school and high school. In some cases, students will transition from a primary school to an intermediate school before moving into middle school and high school.
Specific school assignments should be found using the school zone locator based on a student’s physical address, especially if the primary residence is near the border of a specific school zone.
