What have we covered so far?
1. Look at the inside cover of the red book and scratch off the code. Go to act.wiley.com and create an account and use the code from the scratch off. This will give you 400 extra practice questions.
2. Use the Holy Grail document to find which questions match up to your focus areas. The document labels the focus area and then it has a fraction which represents Problem# / Page#. You can find your focus areas in the data document in the folder you received at the banquet OR by logging in to Pareto (next step). Also read chapter 2 in the red book. This covers several strategies that apply to all focus areas.
3. Log in to Pareto. Go to https://analyze-ed.com Click Login in the top right corner. Use your student number without the s for the username. The password is Spring2019 - notice the uppercase S. Once logged in you will see 12 focus areas.
Inside each area you will have details about the area. At the bottom of all the each page you will see a red button that says "Skip to practice questions".
Your goal is to practice until you reach 100% on all the 12 focus areas and get an Advanced rating (gold stars).

What is the ACT Academy and when is all of this going to take place?
The results our students get from the ACT Academy will be in direct relation to the time, effort, attitude and work ethic they put into the ACT Academy. They can have all of the resources in the world, access to the most amazing teachers, and the most encouraging parents in the school, but if they don’t make this a priority, they will not see the results they want. will get There are many extra-curricular activities and job-related days that will conflict with the Academy.
There are six parts to the program:
1. Pre-Assessment - All students will take a practice ACT Exam in order to draw a baseline analysis to determine their strengths and weaknesses. This will take approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes (English - 45 min, Math - 60 min, Reading - 35 min, and Science - 35 min) and the turnaround time for scoring and analysis will be around ten days, so we are going to break up the test into three days next week, so we can have them processed shortly after Easter Weekend.
- Monday, April 15th - ACT English (8:45 - 9:45)
- Tuesday, April 16th - ACT English (8:45 - 9:30) / English Makeup - ACT Science (9:30 - 10:05)
- Wednesday, April 17th - ACT Reading (8:45 - 9:20) / Math & Science Makeups
- Thursday, April 18th - Makeup day
Because these subtests are vitally important, any student who does not complete all 4 ACT subtests by Thursday, April 18th @ 4:00 PM, cannot participate in the ACT Academy. If you know you will have an excused absence next week, please make arrangements for makeups in advance. Students will receive several analysis reports from their ACT Exam. The formative assessment report provides a comprehensive evaluation of student's strength and weakness by skills within each sub test. The report will prioritize and outline specifically where they will need to focus on each subtest.
2. Kickoff Banquet
On Wednesday, April 24th (6:00 PM) we will have an ACT Academy Kickoff Banquet to honor our students and families for their induction into the ACT Academy. We will have a nice dinner, go over the details of the program, answer questions, sign their ACT Academy Participation Contract, and distribute their study manuals. This is a very special event, so please get this in your schedule quickly. Because of the size of this group, space / seating will be very limited, requiring all families to reserve their space for the banquet, so we can gauge our food and seating in advance.

3. Set Goals - Goals may look very different from student-to-student, based on the number of times they have taken the exam and/or the area they want to focus. The analysis report will give each student a prioritized list of specific skill areas that need to be covered in order to improve their score. For a student who has taken their test for the first time, may have low scores in all four areas. We would recommend they focus on the top three skill areas for each subtest during the six-week Academy window. On the other hand, a student who has scored a 28 in English, 18 in math, 27 in science and 26 in reading, may want to only focus their goal on increasing their math score. This would allow them to focus on more skill areas over the six-week period. We will encourage the following plans based on focus:
- All four sub-group tests - Focus on top three prioritized skill areas
- Three sub-group tests - Focus on top five skill areas
- Two sub-group tests - Focus on top seven skill areas
- One sub-group test - Focus on top ten skill areas
4. Personalized Content
Once they receive their prioritized list of specific skill areas, students will have access to Pareto online content which is personalized to each student’s improvement needs. For example, a student who has scored a 18 on the ACT® and looking to improve the score by 3-composite point, will focus on ~300 questions instead of the 1000+ questions in a standard ACT® Prep book. There are short videos to help you refresh the concept being tested, questions to help them master the concepts, and a proficiency tracker to help both students and teachers understand if they are getting better with practice
5. Teacher Support
We will provide additional support by having teachers available who are contracted outside of the school day to provide tutoring and making sure the students are staying on pace with their goals. Teachers in Math, Science, English, Reading and Test-taking Strategies will be available to students every Saturday from 8 AM -12 PM starting 4/27 and ending on 6/01 (6 Saturdays) and every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM starting 5/01 and ending on 6/05.
6. ACT EXAM
The ACT Exam will be June 8th and will be administered at South-Doyle High School to make it easier on our students. This gives us six-weeks to prepare for the exam and increase their scores.
Tutoring Attendance Requirements
There are lots of questions about how often you have to attend these tutoring sessions. Again, the more time you invest, the greater results you will see in your scores. We do not want this so rigid that you have to attend every time the doors open, but this will not be a come and go as you please Academy. Obviously, if you are trying to improve all four subgroup areas, your attendance will need to be greater than someone attending only one subgroup. The following requirements will be established as a minimum for attendance.
All students must be involved in tutoring at least one of the two days per week. This allows us to check your progress toward your goals and focus on answer questions from your areas of need. It also guarantees practice on test-taking strategies and time management.

We do not want transportation to be a barrier to a student’s participation in the ACT Academy. Any student who may need transportation for the tutoring sessions on Saturdays and Wednesday afternoons, must request in advance, so we can build a transportation route. Even if you only need it occasionally, you will need to sign up, so we can build a transportation route for our bus service. Once we set this route, it will be very difficult to add students.

This is Tim Berry, Executive Principal of South-Doyle High School with an important offer. As a parent of teenage kids, I understand the importance of strong ACT scores for scholarship money and acceptance into the college of choice. I also know that it can be very expensive to get the outside help to increase these scores. West Knoxville has many expensive after-hours tutoring programs and the internet offers expensive on-line tutorials that may not work with your budget or travel time. What if I told you we have a solution in South-Knoxville for our students, that could increase your child’s ACT score and it will not cost you a penny? I have submitted a proposal from Title I funds to host our own ACT Academy for students who want to increase their scores, and that proposal has been accepted. The next ACT exam is being administered June 8th, which gives us about 8 weeks to get prepared. In our ACT Academy, we will take care of their ACT analysis, study guide, practice tests, exam fees, tutoring, and even transportation (if needed) as part of our plan to increase their scores. We just need for them to attend regularly, stay focused on the plan and work hard.
