Accessing the enrichment resources found within the Gifted and Talented Tier 1 Canvas course is a fabulous way to keep our advanced students' minds engaged until the very end of school.

Click on this link to enroll in the course:

    Then click "Enroll in Course"

Our webpage at knoxschools.org/gt is a fabulous resource for apps, websites, activities, and games students can play during the summer to prevent the "summer slide", a loss of skills learned during the school year. Of course we want our students to read lots of books, but don't forget about doing some real-world math, too! Use math skills while you're baking, buying souvenirs, shopping, keeping video game statistics, or camping. There are countless resources available to prevent the loss of learned skills. In your computer's browser, search "preventing summer slide" for more ideas.

See the table below for PD opportunties offered by the Gifted and Talented Department this Summer. We hope you're able to join us at one or more sessions.

    Teacher Reflections

    Creating Cultures of Thinking

Q: How do I give thinking time? Are homework assignments and classwork infused with opportunities for thinking? Teacher’s A: Homework assignments don’t offer as much thinking as is incorporated into their classwork. I do not provide them enough time on a daily basis to develop their thinking. As I reflect, I think I do more of the thinking for them, or my advanced students do.

Math Makes Sense – Nix the Tricks

Q: What is one thing you learned today that you will use with your students in the near future?

Teacher’s A: Become in the habit of sense making first, before using “tricks” in teaching math.

Conceptual Understanding: The Key to Number Sense

Teacher’s Comment: “Thank you for providing me with several strategies other than an algorithm.”
