Cedar Bluff Middle School first in nation to fly Medal of Honor Flag

Medal of Honor Recipient Colonel Bruce Crandall was the guest speaker at Cedar Bluff Middle School’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony on Tuesday, November 13. Colonel Crandall received his Medal of Honor, the Army’s highest award for valor, during a White House ceremony February 26, 2007 for his heroic actions in the Battle of Ia Drang. Colonel Crandall was the helicopter pilot who continued to deliver men and ammunition while evacuating the wounded in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley during the Vietnam War. His actions were portrayed in the book and movie, “We Were Soldiers.”

Tim Smith and Amy Melendy, social studies teachers at Cedar Bluff Middle School, have worked diligently to introduce the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation Character Development Program at the school. Representatives from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation are collaborating with Smith and Melendy to incorporate Medal of Honor curriculum into classroom instruction this year. As a result of these efforts, Cedar Bluff Middle School will be the first school in the nation to receive and fly a Medal of Honor Flag.

The Congressional Medal of Honor flag snaps in the wind. Cedar Bluff Middle became the nation's first school to fly the flag.
